Cost of fitting new double electric socket

I know I've just said that..i was more replying to figures of £60 for a couple of new replacement sockets fitted..be making £50 for half an hours work..no way.
I skim over when I am done mate - invisible once painted and takes a bit longer. However I only do domestic work for family and friends as no fucker wants to pay my day rate. Currently (ha) putting an installation right that some cowboy thought was acceptable. f***ing plastic conduit in an entrance hall?

There's a lot more work involved in a new placement. If it was just replacing as previously said I'd be happy to walk the OP through this to save them a pretty penny, as long as they are comfortable to do so.

I won't be carrying out any new placement work as electrical work isn't my main job.

So you would talk an unqualified incompetent person through an electrical job. Wow.
It’s dangerous to work on electrics lads. Get someone qualified in please.
You can get a new double socket from Screwfix for £2..maybe £5 for a chrome look one..how long to fit it..10 minutes??..new placement is totally different though.
It cost £550 for my tester.
£350 for my latest edition of qualification needed £1000 overall and 4 years training
£1000 in tools
£1000 a year 3rd party insurance.
You need to drive to the job and back.
Like all trades, everything is fine until someone gets hurt.

That’s got nowt to do with anything..£50-£60 for 45 minutes work is scandalous.

Best piece of advice anyone could give. The consequences of unqualified people attempting to carry out electrical work can be catastrophic and often fatal.

So driving for a hour there and back in a van that’s has to be kept on the road as nothing to do with it? Paying for 3rd party liability insurance, accountants, training and such has nowt to do with it? It does mate. It’s called a profit margin.
You wouldn’t believe the amount of simple socket changes I’ve done that have no earth (very dangerous).
You do realise once an electrician touches an electrical installation they become liable?

It’s got nowt to do with the customer how much your training and equipment cost..it’s about charging a fair price for the work undertook..the other week i got a ‘magnatec’ unit fitted to my boiler..the lad quoted £170..the unit cost £100..he was at my house nearly 3 hours..70 divided by 3..£23 an hour..I appreciate he’s got tax and stamp to pay..this lad is Corgi and Baxi registered..that’s reasonable..£50-£60 for 45 minutes work is taking the piss.

Ten year ago corgi stopped mate iirc.
Anyway. You are not getting it mate. Ten mins or 3 hours, the overheads are the same. Half day that’s what he as charged mate. That’s what I charge no matter how small the job is, or it’s just not worth it. Going by your calculations you would expect me to drive to a supplier then to your house spend 45 mins there for £18. Minus fuel money
There was a thread about tradesman not turning up the other day. This is exactly why we don’t.

It’s a hourly rate mate. You are not bringing a car to a garage. We are coming to you.

I’m not paying for your overheads though..that’s up to you to manage your own business..I mean if people are daft enough to be paying £50-£60 an hour that’s their problem..during the summer I got that rubber ‘permaroof’ stuff put on my porch and conservatory..two lads came out and quoted £1200..I asked for a breakdown of materials..£600 materials..£600 labour..I asked how long they would be..5 hours..so £600 divided by 5 is £120 divided by 2 is £60..£60 an hour??..scandalous..i politely told them I wouldn’t be using them..let me ask you this..someone 10 minutes away from you wants 2 replacement sockets..let’s say 40 minutes work..how much you charging?

Thought you were a roofer?
I’m a builder mate. Qualified spark. And the roofing came when I had to get all the roofing tickets for the solar panel boom so I could fit panels and commission them. Now that was serious money. Ooooof.

Pond liner..probably all it is but I was desperate..one lad did it for £700..£550 materials and £150 labour..he was here nearly 5 hours so £30 per hour..that’s the maximum I would pay..the way he did it was a lot less carry on than the other two anarl.

He can’t pay tax or vat like. Saying that charging his prices he will never get over the threshold. His company makes no profit I’m afraid. How does he advertise or put fuel in his van and pay his insurances though.

He’s self employed and fairly local..he only needs to work 30 hours a week and that’s £900..even with his overheads he’s doing ok.
