Significant investment by FPP has been made

They turned out to be hollow words because we had a load of large salary players that were not performing in any sense compared to the amount they were being paid. I'd assume Donald thought they'd try and earn their salary.

I think it was telling that he just used the word budget instead of 'war best' or specifically 'transfer budget' as it was clearly a way of sort of deflecting the question but the idea behind it still is completely valid. The players let us down at the end of the day. Their large salaries hamstrung the club and limited what could be done.
yes its true we had some bad value for money players..but that doesnt take away from the fact they had to be paid.
we also spent more on fees than any other team.
They’ve stated it’s investment mate. If it isn’t then that would mean they are telling lies.
the guy doenst know what investment means..he thinks a loan cant be an investment..yet abranwhicchs wntire investment in cheslea is via loans.

Well the last of them are gone - where was the improvement thereafter?

One of them was also our best player last season.

No. I didn’t take it to mean one thing. It was absolutely clear how it was intended. Donald was discussing in the context of us being a powerful entity, not in context of us having a big budget that was a pain in the arse to manage. It was to engage and excite supporters at an early stage. It’s highly, highly disingenuous to say otherwise.

And if they since clarified it, that encapsulates exactly what I mean about Donald anyway. Something is said, then there’s a climbdown (we paid Ellis £40m for the club, also had to be downgraded and re-explained).
Those two things are completely intertwined. We were/are a powerful entity in league one because we have/had the biggest budget, having the biggest budget is also a pain in the arse when the money you're spending is not actually getting you the results you want.

If you employ 20 gardeners then you could boast that you'll have the best looking garden around, if those 20 gardeners then start digging up the turf and cutting down the wrong trees, it doesn't stop you from having the biggest budget it just means you're being completely fucked over in terms of wasted potential.

If I was a new owner and was having to pay out double figure millions on the players and infrastructure and then someone said "will there be millions available as cash in the transfer window" I don't think it is unacceptable to reply "we have the biggest budget" with some sort of expectation that it would actually mean something on the pitch.

To be truthful I didn’t know it could be both. To me investment is giving a business a hundred quid hoping you may at some point get two hundred back But there’s no guarantee. A loan is something that has to be paid back over time regardless and with interest.
but there again I’m incredibly thick so I have trouble knowing the difference. If it’s a loan why not call it that? Same for investment.
or is it some kind of ploy to get around football league regulations?

I take your point. But that absolutely wasn’t how the initial conversation went or the context of the discussion when Donald made the claim of having the biggest budget.

do we need money? i thought people wanted bargains?
there needs to be a few signings in jan no doiubt..maybe with a manager whpo knows some payers in england, and more scouts we can find good ones.
I'd have said so. This frugal mentality and talk of sustainability is all very nice and fanciful, but money talks.

I didn't see people complaining that we got Grigg at the time. It's just unfortunate...again... that Sunderland are paying one of the highest wages in the league for another player who is not even on the scale of 'form'.

He said takeover at a recent talk in and said he didn't know if him and Charlie would be involved.

The story changes quite often as is often the case with sales people SD and PR people CM. I am not sure either of them know the complete truth, lets just hope we can move up the table because academy and recruitment means fuck all now at least until January and even then that's not the recruitment they are alluding to...

And we are f***ing skint. Or were until recently. Even now ten mil, if that’s what it is isn’t big money by today’s standards.
