Vaux site......

Again no answers & confusing defending with me asking questions.

You're using the term labour in a derogatory sense yet praise S.Tyneside labour council despite the town centre being shite.

I'll point this out again.
Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool & Birmingham are all Labour with vibrant city centres.

Their secondary city neighbours are also Labour but struggle to attract private investment.

Now why do you think that is?
Is it Sunderland councils fault for the state of Bradford or Wirral?
The problem is with Sunderland Labour council not other Labour council. How come they get it right but ours get it wrong in so many ways.I have had it from a reliable source a local repirter there is more pantomine party politics goes on at civic centre council meetings here much more tjhan any neigjbouring local authority and has been the case for years.Labour council /Party before Sunderland were his exact words.

When the shipyatds and pits closed many of the shop stewardd union types conveniently became councillors and virtually took over the Labour council. If the council leader didnt have a shioyatd backgroind he had a shipyatd background. in the 80s 90s and 00s. Complete amateurs joined in tje council cabinet by similiar typrs like a brotjerhood along with family connections.Once we had professional people like solicitors running the council then for the last 25/30 years the damage has been done by numerous union shop steward pit/ shioyarders completely out of their depth who have been guilty of mismanagement and comfortable unfortinately in the knowledge they had a safe seat.Since then a failing council and Labour mp s should take a fair share of blame too for under representation has resulted in a failing city.

No because obviously my standatds must be higher than yours.Im trying to lift Sunderland up not put it down.If your content with a third rate city and incompetent council then that is your problem and your ilk.

There is no doubt that bad decision have been made in the past however some of the factors you’ve raised about the city are outwith the control of the local council. I’d be interested to know which similar secondary towns and cities you can give examples of where you think they’ve done significantly better.
With plain idiots like you no wonder the hapless Labour council keep getting voted in.

The vaux site is the biggest legacy of a failing Labour council. It sums their incompetence and even when they have finally gott it lack of vision. Its frightening how many blinketedidiots still try to defend them or make up excuses.Must be part of the Labour establishment or one of the voting sheep.

Can you clarify what you mean by lack of vision? Can you say what you feel is wrong with the vision?

You know that the people who actually run the council are the CEO (the previous one runs a multimillion pound business) & directors who are very well qualified

As far as councillors, every council is the same. Sunderland isnt some special case.

And you very much arent trying to lift Sunderland. This thread was about a positive story & you derailed it with negativity.

Fwiw in the locals I generally vote lib dem as they actually make an effort in engaging with voters. So thats clamped your conspiracy theory.

Ps - still waiting for your answer.
A positive story 15/20 years late.😄😄😄

Look at the impressive Sunderland arc plans fron early 2000s and compare it to what we are gonna get. That beam building could only be described as iconic in Sunderland nowhere else. This prime site city centre location could have a once in a generation opportinity to build a city skyline similiar to Salford quays in visual appearance witj modern high rise imposing buildings to really make a statement about Sunderland as a city.I would include a viewing tower also with a cafe/ resyaurant at top level. We are gonna get a watered down end result as is often the case from previous plans witj this failed council.Look at the sherpfolds sporting village oppisite first planned over 15 years ago. Many business re located with this council buying up land but nothing had happened.Look at the plans they have for the civic centre land....housing ffs.Why not an indoor arena / ice rink or somethong tjat will entice people to visit there being near Park Lane both from Sunderland and beyond.? If we had professional people running tje council ovet the years this city would be in far better shape than it is today with coordinated planning and actual delivery on ambitious regeneration projects from artists impressions to reality.

Coming soon....a new ice arena for the North East?

Understand they are or have looked at an ice rink / indoor arena, but that needs to be grounded in a business case surely...no point building one that you cant find an operator for? Look at Gateshead quays, they’ve been talking about a conference centre for well over a decade and it’s only now coming to fruition because the metro arena operation will be going there. Also the auditorium is currently under construction which will house between 400-700 people and the stadium does the larger scale events.

In terms of the Vaux you are right buildings could be larger I guess but with that comes added risk in terms of the scale of development ie how quickly they can fill the building. Architecture is not to everyone’s liking and agree that I’m not a great fan of it myself. Salford is a bad example as it’s not quite comparable to Sunderland, as Manchester is now scene as the second city in England.

Stadium village ear marked for residential development in the main I think.

I think the vision is there is just the ability / wealth to be able to deliver it. Unfortunately property value and rents in Sunderland make most schemes unviable.

Can you refer me to a post where you've ever been ever positive about Sunderland?

Do you honestly think that it's up to the council to just build a series of sky scraper with viewing platforms and an arena in the city centre, with no private investment, no feasibility study into whether the demand is there, in such a small city. You dont go from a post industrial waste land to what you are suggesting without years of small incremental steps, that most people wouldn't even notice. Agree that a lot of time and money had been wasted over the years, but things are beginning to look up. Most of all we need private investment and jobs in the city centre to start the domino effect that ends with high rise office blocks with cafes on the top.

Again though, can you point to other cities of similar stature to Sunderland that have got it significantly better than Sunderland , so we can all look at what we could have had? It would make it a lot easier to get onside with you if we could all see what we are missing

Like I have droned on about for ages, we need to use it to bring new business in. A site that big and that has been under such debate over the years can’t just be used to jockey business about that already here. To me it should create more than a thousand new jobs from either new or expanding companies.
I know it’s about footfall but footfall doesn’t guarantee success just look at the top end of the town beside parklane which is the busiest part atm.
Like Ocado

Any news on dragongate boris 🤔
400 jobs is a canny start given they’re about 5% through development of the site marra.
300 by the radio but I will take your word on it, aye it’s canny. They are 100% through the first build and it’s not full marra. That’s worrying. 95% of the site to go.
