Baseball Playoffs

Has anybody been following this in any detail? NFL has its own thread but baseball seems to be much maligned in the U.K.

The Houston Astros are on track to get to their second World Series (yeah yeah, World Series and it’s only the USA etc) in three years. They’re currently 3-1 against the Yankees with the winner playing the Washington Nationals.

The major downside is that MLB tends to be an evening game which means trying to watching it here involves getting up at midnight unless you’re lucky enough to see a 9pm(UK time) game.

Was watching it earlier in the year but have lost track a bit last few weeks. think the last time i saw it it was the Cubs Brewers series of games

Went to a yankees game. Worst 2/3 hours of my life.

Put me off following it further.

It’s called the World Series because the original competition was sponsored by The World Newspaper

That’ll be yesterday’s game, wasn’t a good one for him. Great for the Astros though 😎

That’s a shame, I’ve loved every game I’ve been to, even watching the Astros lose to the Orioles this season and spending 5 hours in the pissing rain at the Red Sox.
Rounders with blokes. I've never followed it tbh but there must be a reason it's never caught on worldwide.

Personally I think it’s a great game and I’m thoroughly addicted to it. I expect the time difference makes it extremely hard for it to catch on in Europe, like I said most games are evening games so you’re looking at midnight / 1am here.

Just checked, seems that’s a myth.

NFL has a big following and the time difference doesn't seem to be a big problem though.

It’s a Sunday afternoon game for most matches though, so you’re talking a 6pm start here. Late games and MNF are harder to watch admittedly but all in all it’s easier than getting up at 12/1am to watch a game.

Didn't they have a game at West Ham?

Pretty sure the first live NFL game on Sky is at 6pm or summat.

The Yankees played the Red Sox at West Ham this year. Hoping to go next year for Cubs v Cardinals.

That’s what I’m saying re: NFL, most of their Sunday games are at 6pm for us bar the late games and Monday night games so it’s easier to follow.

If you’re lucky you get a baseball game starting at 9pm here but most of the playoff games have started at midnight / 1am.

Have Detroit got a team? Might go for them. I know a few west coast teams nicked east coast teams years ago. Sacrilege that Brooklyn lost its team and I've read lots about Ebbets Field.

They do, Detroit Tigers, one of the original American League teams.

There’s been a lot of team movement over the years, definitely more so than with NFL. Detroit Tigers are one of the oldest “original” teams still playing in the MLB.
The Astros who I follow are an expansion team from 1962, originally called the Houston Colt 45s. I did a tour of the Houston Texans stadium and they had some pictures of the ground breaking ceremony at the old Astrodome where the Astros / Oilers played; the ground breaking involved the owners shooting Colt 45 pistols into the dirt...

I love it. Nationals got rid of arguably the best player in the league to the Phillies for an enormous contract and now have a chance of winning it all. Good business. Hope the Astros win the WS.

If we can beat the Yankees tonight / tomorrow morning then it’s all over and I’m quietly confident of a WS win over the Nationals. If we don’t win tonight then there’s two home games to seal it, unless there’s a total collapse from the Astros we’ll at least make it to the WS.
The Yankees are all power hitting and average pitching..they’re fkd now like..Houston won’t blow this.

Cole the other night was phenomenal after a sloppy start, walking 7 (I think it was seven) players was poor to say the least. Hope he doesn’t go to the Yankees...

Houstons pitching is far too good to blow this..JV back in tonight..no problem..I’d be wary of the Nationals like..seem to have a ‘our year’ feel to them.

A Washington Houston WS is a tasty prospect with Houston obvious favourites. But as Jays fan I'm going with the Expos franchise on this one. It's baseball. Surprises happen.

Haven't been massively impressed with Verlander lately, hopefully tonight changes that. Astros getting two WS in three years would be phenomenal so here’s hoping.

Boooooooooo

For those still awake it’s BT Sport 3 tonight.

Out of interest why would you go for the Nationals as a Jays fan? Just because they’re NL?

The Nationals came from the old Montreal Expos franchise which moved because they just didn't get the fan support. Canada is hockey country. The Expos though had one of the best farm systems in the game. Should have had a WS shot had the league decided not to strike that year.

Just supporting our Canuck cousins eh?
