Dj Huey, binni, Smokey Joe, spen, Yoz,

MC Intense

DJ Destroy

It was a fate worse than death getting a tape and listening only to learn it was Smokey Joe on the one'n'twos

Destroy (Peter) was/is the best DJ from up here imo, superb mixing before everyone managed to get it down to a fine art. Peter and Jimmy (G-Force) did a shitload for the scene in the NE and Sunderland back in the early 90's.
Anyone who knows Peter will confirm he's a grumpy bastard, bit of a running joke over the years to take the piss out of him for it.

In reply to the OP, the original lads at Wear FM set the tone for 4 or 5 years of great tunes and a real youth movement at the time, nothing but respect for them. Was never a massive fan of the breakbeat / jungle tunes but without one you don't end up with the rest, it was linear and happened very fast.
From those later Djs to come onto the scene, well for me anyway there were 2 that I liked over the others. Destroy and Selector C were brilliant. Wasn’t a fan of the harder stuff, but these two were different. Had a few tapes by these. Loved them.

Destroy was the first local DJ to play trance in clubs up here, ahead of his time tbh.

i'll beg to differ ;)

obviously agree, as regards the radio. I think with a lot of the promos coming up from London and down south, where the music and scene was more breakbeat/jungle, then we were gonna get it - even if we didn't. if you know what i mean. the scene had fractured into so many different genres, from 92 onwards and i think those of us who were going out prior to that, were very fortunate. ie, you'd hear electro, hip hop, house, detroit techno and the belgian rave stuff and maybe even some 80's 'pop' and think nothing of it, as it all worked together.

@td586 do you still dj with Big Chris ? he use to go round with myself and @tunstall birdman , was always wanting to buy my 12" records which are still in my loft to this day , did you also know Dopey (C.H)?

ain't seen chris for a while mate. never dj'd with him tbh. he's with PD, moreso. C.H. I still see him, from time to time. usually in hoochie coochie and setting the dancefloor alight.

I never got dressed up either. I used to go to the Havana with a multi coloured t shirt on, some desert boots, and a back pack with some random dry clothes in it. The fashion side never wet my juices to be honest as I was there to rock my socks off.

Was Dj Spen on at the beginning g when all that hip hop and break beat stuff was on. If so I caught about half an hour of it before the music changed gears and I also thought it was awesome. I wasn’t sure it was Spen though as I didn’t know he played that type of musi
Colin's first wave; he was doing the Eclipse in 1991 if the flyers are anything to go off - same time as Destroy
Before my time like

Should hear After Dark New Years Eve 1993 for Destroy's beats.
Much better than the Blue Monkey ones that are out and about.

If thats the 30 min set without an MC I uploaded it over a decade ago marra. At the time I stated I wasn't even sure it was an AD set, I got it off Colin (Selector C) and he wasn't even sure what club it was from, only it was Destroy. Most of the AD sets kicking about on youtube we're originally on my JMCMUK75 youtube channel which got tookdown years ago, luckily others copied them and re uploaded so kept the vibes alive.

colin did a couple of slots at the monkey, around the late summer of 91. his brother, used to m.c. for him
Funnily enough the flyer I saw was M.C. Selector-C, so I just assumed it was the big dog

Nah it's 60 minutes. It's got the crowd on - but mercifully no MC because he'll have done the opening hours won't he.

Most money I ever spent on a record was one of Colins old Venue monsters. Bought X Stress - I've Got The Feeling for £120 about 13 years ago, also bought a few big Venue tunes that were his at the same time. Sad but I loved the fact they had been played in the club back in the day.

Destroy was quite melodic and used to play a lot of the Italian stuff. He did play a bit harder at times when the after dark was going, but for me I remember his lighter stuff of which I was a huge fan.

When I first started mixing I didn’t even know what the word genre actually meant. I just remember thinking oh this will go with that tune etc. Also searching the record shops would be crazy as you would go in looking for a certain tune then see there were deals on with white labels and find real gems on the b sides, the dubs and that. Grande to me wasn’t and still isn’t a word I have in my vocabulary.

Although I appreciate Dj Destroy, I do feel that he wasn’t a pioneer in the sense that he brought superb mixing before anyone else and that he was the first to play trance up here in the north east. Trance in its raw form was being played in happy houses around Sunderland way before Destroy burst on the scene. Mid late eighties to be precise. Still he played some good stuff.
On the subject of north east Djs were there any others apart from those on wear fm or the usual clubs who maybe were on the same level but just didn’t get themselves out there. I just remember years ago going to the local happy house parties and a lad called Ellis played out at them and was decent yet I never knew of him playing in any clubs. Also jinja simma from Sunderland used to do a bit but also not in the clubs. Just had me thinking that’s all. I would there were loads locked away mixing in their bedrooms who never got a look in. Fate, talent, luck all three.

simma…..good call.... didn't he have a sort of 'signature' mix of young m.c. "the fastest rhyme" over the top of "voice of africa"?...a pair of belt drive ariston decks, if memory serves..

never heard or remember the name "ellis". where was he from?

spen and yoz, were possibly the only people in sunderland from 1990 that had a set of 1210's in their bedroom. i think their parents won a footie coupon, or something like that, and the lads got decks. i'd never seen so many records in that room. i'd give them a call to see if they were in and if they were, call up with a few cans and hopefully, get a new tape done, with the latest tunes on, there and then.

Steve Ellis was his name and he used to do the late eighties happy houses all over the town centre. Strobe light, or public works orange flashing one stolen most likely from the roads, a smoke machine and a set of belt drive cranked into a sound system or decent hi fi,,,agh bliss

Who were they as I might know them. I know pretty much everyone in and around the area who was into the owld house music.

Back in the day we used to borrow ( insert dodgy cough ) various lights and things for the happy houses. The council as they are now used to let us borrow yellow flashing lights encased in a metal box sat on a tripod. These only had one colour YELLOW or if you are posh AMBER, however with the help of certain chemicals found in small pieces of blot paper these lights would change colour,,,,and shape if you ate the right paper. These wonderful events went on in factories, houses that had been boarded up and on one occasion in an old dentists. These were the originals setting the tone for what was to follow re rave malarkey. I find it amusing to see posts suggesting certain Djs did this and did that, being the flag bearers, when in fact the scene was up and running well before 1992 as has been mentioned on this post. 1988 Havana down in boro was ahead of the game up in the north east, however before people from Sunderland went there most had been to these happy houses. Seems this little but really important detail has been lost with time. Maybe the pyramids really were built by aliens after all.
