Can England win the Test Championship in 2021?

Sharpshooter

Midfield
NZ and SA away (Although the NZ fixtures isn't part of the Test Championship).

Sri Lanka away

WI and Pak both at home.

India away.

Not unreasonable to think they can win every series up until India, which if they can at least avoid a thrashing there good chance to make the Lords final.

The formats a load of bollocks and disadvantages us. Us and Australia only received 54 points for our efforts over 5 tests while Sri Lanka got 60 for winning one test. It favours teams who play shorter series so we are handicapped from the start.

Not to mention the fact that winning in SA and India will be hard. There’s also better teams about than us ie New Zealand.

The format should be 3 matches every series as a mandatory and any others in a longer series like the Ashes shouldn’t count towards the points total.

Yeah they can

They’ve dug in all series and their attitude has changed.

Few tweaks
We really can’t mind we aren’t even top 4 in the world never mind top 2. Performances will have to improve massively for us to have a chance. We’ll have to build a team that can bat long and actually get past 400 in a test match, and we don’t have one at the minute.

We can

We have lost 1 series at home in 7 years

Going to Sri Lanka and South Africa where we have won on our last visits

We can get maximum points in the two home series next year but think it will be South Africa and India where we fall short. India are nigh on invincible at home and we’ll be lucky to get any points over there.

Yeah true, don’t rule us out though

We win a hell of a lot of games of cricket

Not with Root as captain IMO. I don’t think he’s a great captain and the runs he doesn’t score as captain is a major loss too. Free him of the shackles of captaincy and we have a chance.

It is very difficult to see this team getting anything other than their arses absolutely handed to them in India. We may have outspun Sri Lanka recently, but only because their batting line-up is the worst in their recent history too. The India spinners are a cut above and their batsman are in a different league to ours. We'll get hammered - I'd be more confident in Australia to be honest.

Remember England only need to come in the top 2 to get to the final at Lords.

So they'll competing with Australia most likely for that second spot.

Australia's fixtures:

Pakistan (H) - 2 tests
New Zealand (H) - 3 tests
Bangledesh (A) - 2 tests
India (H) - 4 tests
South Africa (A) - 3 tests

England fixtures:

South Africa (A) - 4 tests
Sri lanka (A) - 2 tests
West Indies (H) - 3 tests
Pakistan (H) - 3 tests
India (A) - 5 tests

Its advantage Australia because their 'hard' away games were the 5 tests against England, which they came out with a 2-2 draw. They both have South Africa away, but Australia have India at home.

Don’t think you should discount New Zealand mind. They have a very good team and their schedule is very favourable. They also only play 2-3 tests during a series so they’ll find it much easier to pick up points.

Wasn’t sure where to post

Telegraph reporting Buttler could be given gloves in Nz

With bairstow left to prove it as a batsman if picked

I suggested this in the ashes thread, I don’t think you should play both at the min, need a top 5 of batsman and stokes as all rounder

Can see logic for sure just bairstow is actually a good gloveman and Buttler isn’t

Pope to go too, and one of sibley n Crawley to go with root sliding to 4

Injuries still in bowlers so Mahmood from lanc to go

If true not worse decisions

It does annoy me we wasted an ashes series opening with Roy n root at 3 but in the past

On the whole doesn't sound too bad .... but who is making these decisions? I mean where is the coach for the NZ tour in this?
