Great North Run

I love reading all the positive comments about running, keep it up.

is there anywhere that lists all of the organised races that you can enter?

i'm guessing there isn't many during the winter? i'm aiming for the redcar half marathon at the end of this month and then would probably like to have one to aim for at the start of next year

It's not the easiest of sites to navigate but here:

Nice one. Think I will. Much faster course like.

did you sign up? i've just registered like. £33. hoping to knock at least 5 mins off my GNR time, under 1.50 and i'm buzzing

Not yet I haven't. Carrying a rather painful foot/ankle injury so reckon it'll come too soon for me tbh.

I’m doing that one! Back to running club tonight after 10 days away on holiday, I’ve ran a few times whilst I was away like so it shouldn’t be too bad, dreading the cold mind.

have you done it before? whats the parking like?

going to be a bit back down to earth with a bump after the mayhem of the GNR. driving down on by myself, no welcoming party waiting at the end, no thousands of people cheering and no tv cameras.

I haven’t mate, I’m getting the train down from Durham as I hate driving when I feel like my legs are going to fall off, which they will after this, as I want a decent time.

i was looking at trains but there isn't an option from sunderland. takes 2 hours and earliest train leaves at 0830 which is too late. mental that it takes 2 hours to get to redcar on the train like

Hamsterley is a bit of a beast mind, 287 metres elevation according to my Garmin. Cracking workout though & the last couple of miles being all downhill is pretty exhilarating if you've got enough left in the legs to keep pushing.

The 19 miles I did round there took me to the brink both times I did it. In the space of a couple of months I did Sunderland half, east Durham coast half then the 19 mile round hamsterley. Put some miles in that year with the training to, lot of it hill. Gave myself a year off racing 3 year ago after it and never done a race again since  (apart from handful of parkrun). Still run 3-4 times a a week but the days of me doing halves in under 1.50 and the 19 round hamsterly in under 3 hours are long gone methinks. More than happy now to plod round 6 mile or so at 9.10 mins per mile now.
