Ashes 5 test - The Oval

Exactly mate, both have done well no stick from me mate, it's been extremely diffcult for opening batsman on both sides in this series!

It was ridiculous and said from months before the series to open with Roy and extremely unfair on him.

Now by putting him in a really unfair and unnatural position he is getting slaughtered in some quarters you could see it coming.

Was it ridiculous and unfair for Denly to open given that he doesn't open in county cricket?

Fantastic day by England, thoroughly out played them so far

Quick slog in the morning then get into them
Buttler 2 innings in a row had a ton on if he wanted it

This is why the obsession with averages needs to stop, 3 of the last 4 innings he could have played for himself and got a not out

People obsessed with stats
f***ing typical this. There was absolutely no need to force the issue at 5 an over. We've got two days to bowl them out. Bayliss can't leave soon enough for me

Eh?

Am I watching a different game?

How can any England fan moan after a day like that? I honestly despair sometimes

Christ there plenty to be critical about but do you EVER post anything remotely positive abut anything ever. At the end of the day as things stand we have dominated this rest from the first ball and are strong favourites to win this test. All you ever do is whinge and take the negative slant on everything. Law of averages means you will be right sometimes. Post something, one thing, anything positive just to show you can.

It’s laughable

We played really well

Can’t believe what I’m reading here

Not really, I think the way Roy plays as opposed to Denly strongly suggests he would be less suited than Denly to open.

That coupled with the fact ( correct me if I am wrong) that Denly has spent a considerable amount of his early careeer as as a opener, where Roy in red ball cricket had none, meant it surely was a lot less ridiculous and unfair on Denly who has that experience of opening?

Of course ideally neither would open but needs must?

You only seem to appear on this board when we not doing very well to have a go, you another one who constantky twists and very rarely has anything positive at all to say bet you and @GordonMuchallNo1Fan are a right bag of laughs

You were laughing at the second test saying we would not win a test and it looks like it will be two

If England when this game which is likely at the moment Bayliss will have never lost a home series in all the years he has been here, and has not only overseen a World Cup but turned us into one of the most entertaining teams there has been in that format.

Spot on.

Sensible posters calling it as it as usual

Some of these lads can’t be watching it? We’ve batted sensibly most of the last few tests

Tbf we shouldn’t be crawling to a 400 lead, we should be in a position to get 450+ and be out of sight but we’ve let them back into the game a bit. With 2 days to bat and less than 400 to chase they’re still in this when they they shouldn’t be.

Win the World Cup and a 2-2 in ashes, take that all day long, be a fantastic summer

We haven’t have we? They bowled well like, who gave their wicket away? Buttler was batting with the tail.

Must have been watching a different game

Australia aren’t chasing 400 like

The like of Curran and Woakes aren’t batsman like
Paines fucked up here, he knows it, why he’s so tetchy in this press conference and was sledging stokes about Bristol

Not obsessing at averages. He has 5 FC tons and he was well set to get 2 tons.

In both cases he could have batted on at 4 an over and got himself a ton.

Didn't need to try and hit both the balls he got out to out of the park.

For the teams sake we probably needed him to bat longer in both innings. So that defeats your argument.

Yep, still might win the Test Championship and Root will still come under criticism.

They can beat a depleted SA away, Sri Lanka away (since they beat them there last time). England are good at home so I expect them to dispatch both WI and Pak next summer.

The obvious concern is India away but if they can avoid a thrashing there, they should make the final, which remember is at Lords.

That’s not as easy as it sounds particularly when batting with players likely to get out. If he had taken a more cautious approach in the first innings he may have scored less runs or run out of partners. In the first innings it was his counterattacking that helped us put on 50 for the 9th wicket and he got out playing the type of shot that helped us get those vital runs. His approach in this match has scored us 117 runs which should be the difference in a low scoring match.

I'm disappointed for him is all. He's been excellent in this match. Not even criticising him, perhaps worded this wrong.

I felt the shot selection in both dismissals was like it was the 49th over on an ODI by him. Leach has shown to be a capable man to have at the other end. Could put more trust without going to beserk.

Agree. Back in the day you would say Pietersen was a better player than Strauss, but no way would you open with Pietersen. Different techniques/abilities for different positions in the team

Yeah fair enough - me too. He seems a great bloke Buttler and it would have been great if he had got a ton in the match.

Bit disappointed with the late wickets today. Had high hopes of 400 ahead at the close with one of Stokes/Buttler at the crease with license to swing in the morning
Now we will have to nudge and nurdle our way to 400

Still think we have enough runs, but it's not going to be as clear cut as it might

No he couldn't, he was batting with tail enders

Was doing exactly what Stokes did at Leeds.

There is no issue here just moaning for the sake of it.

IMO of course anyway
