ICT COURSES?

I have a relative who is considering doing an online course that includes these types of qualifications -
CompTIA A+
CompTIA Network+
CompTIA Security+

or

Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Developer
MCSD App Builder
MCSA: Web Applications
MCSA: SQL 2016 Business Intelligence Development

Are they worthwhile or is is just ICT companies making money out of punters?

From memory, the CompTIA stuff is fairly entry-level, useful but I can't see it opening too many doors beyond 1st line work.
The Microsoft stuff has totally changed since I had any interest, so I can't comment on them, but they used to be what "proper" IT techies had

I guess the first question should be, "What type of IT career are they looking to get into?"

Solid

IIRC

Avoid the comptia courses not worth it.

Like someone's said depends what he wants to do.

Ta mate. My relative isn't really sure of a specific path yet which is why the courses appeal - the websites seem to suggest that the courses are appropriate for a range of ICT jobs (but they would, wouldn't they?).

Any advice for better online courses for networking/security/coding? Or even any practical courses on hardware repairs?

There are no courses on coding to my knowledge just something you learn then get quizzed at interview. Could be totally wrong. He wouldn't do badly learning python.

The jobs he would get with computia he would get without computia.

His best bet I'm guessing he's young is to just get a service desk or field engineer job. Even with certs he isn't just going to walk into a job with no experience

Service desk you can absolutely walk into, and CompTIA quals will certainly help. But it'll be around the £17k mark.

Apprentiships could be a far better way in depending on age and financial requirements.

Maybe that is for higher level ones? These ones online are in total around the 900 quid price.
CompTIA A+
CompTIA Network+
CompTIA Security+
I meant the salary of a service desk role that requires little-to-no experience. Like the way I got into IT.

Off the top of my head again, the CompTIA exams don't go anywhere. Whereas there are better alternatives for each of those.

CCNA for networks
Microsoft ones for their products
And I'm sure there's better security courses.

wish I could help more, but its people like @Daydream Believer who (at least used to?) knows loads more about this stuff than me.

Yeah I meant a decent IT job not service desk.

He could do an apprenticeship but schemes that train you up and pay for your exams and training are scarce.

Realistically if his family can support.

Get him to to do 3 good certifications studying from home while working part time. Then get in a decent service desk and start applying for higher jobs.

He'll progress much quicker than just working on a service desk with no certs

I did the Comptia Security + exam, its a decent start into an IT Security job, and the main factor was that it fulfilled one of the five years you need to gain CISSP certification, which I now also have. I am looking at doing the Cloud + by Comptia as well as its a good starting point, but then will doing a "proper" cloud exam after that.

I wouldn't discount them totally. the Network one will be a solid building block for just about all IT jobs.

As with the MS certifications, it will really depend on what path they are likely to want to take. Support, development, cloud (azure) etc.

It might be worth his while getting a Service Desk job and seeing what courses they'll pay for him to do, they're likely more Service Management type qualifications like ITIL or whatever, but that's where a lot of money is, fixing broken kit will never make him rich
