4th Ashes Test - Old Trafford

The latter probably. Depends at what point tomorrow (morning) they bowl us out

I think that's unfair. They gave him 4 tests as an opener (which he isn't) then 1 innings as a middle order batsman. If they believe he is good enough then he deserves a decent run at 4 or 5

Persevering with Roy as a test cricketer is more likely to fuck him up as a one day player than see him as a successful test player. It would also be hindering the development of an Ollie Pope for example. Roy might get a hundred against a weaker side on a flat pitch but he will never be a consistent run scorer in test cricket imo. It’s been unfair on him opening the batting but England should cut their losses.

He didn't have to do it like. If he didn't want to. It was his choice. If he chose to do it and didn't choose to do the work to justify his choice, that's on him. He wasn't f***ing press ganged into it while in the pub.

No disrespect but that is a ridiculous post!

He has been selected for his country not a game down the park with his mates.

Of course he will play where he is told for his country!

It's unbelievable that you think he could just turn round on debut for his country and say I don't want too and it was his choice!!!

You have really surprised me as you seemed a sensible poster until that post!

We don’t deserve to win the ashes tbh. Australia have turned up far more prepared and motivated, whilst bettering us in every aspect of the game. Only Stokes’ brilliance has kept us in the series for this long and it’s a damning indictment on our other batsmen and selectors that he’ll have to put in another mammoth performance to save our arses tomorrow.

Your point about Stokes is even more relevant with smith mind

But they still might. 50/50 chance of saving this test still, go into the Oval level, win the toss, Australia bat last and crumble, ala 2009 again.

England deserved to win the World Cup this summer based on being by far the best and most dominant ODI team in the world for past the 2-3 years, no question, but there were huge amounts of good fortune in that final against NZ. Stokes was brilliant at headingly but there was good amounts of luck about that too, gotten away with an LBW and Lyon misses a sitter.

Maybe it's just England's summer, everytime they've needed a bit of luck they've gotten it so far.

Kind of, particularly if we recall the First Test. But take away Smith and they're still the better side.
I would disagree take away smith and look at the averages and the runs scored ?
Stokes the best batting average in the series behind smith.
Archer has had the best individual bowling performance with both sides having two players taking five wickets each.
Cummings and Lyon are the top wicket takers both have bowled more overs. Cummings top by three wickets archer has bowled 75 overs.
Archer also has the best bowling average with hazelwood next on 18.
Archer is also most economical with 2.34
Most expensive bowlers have been root and denley.
Paine and barstow identical in the wicket keeper stage up to now.

So looking at that it really is smith that is giving two equal teams the edge.

Morning team. Bright morning here in M21, no chance of any help from the weather. Ben and Bairstow have a lot to do.

In other news, TFGM have announced that the planned engineering works tomorrow will go ahead, so if you're coming to day 5 there are no trams from the city to Old Trafford on Sunday. Nice.

And the Hardy's Pavilion ran out of Cab Sav.
