Why do people have cars?
Can they just get rid of them because of a tax break?
Does everyone live within a transport system regarding their work?
Does everyone work the hours of transport system hours?
Are places of work easily accessible with public transport?
Do people work in the same place all the time?

I could go on and on and on but it’s not that simple.
Cracking for people that don’t even own a car anyway, free tax break

Who says you can’t do both?
Just raise the price on beef with taxation it should lower demand ;)

You can obviously do both. What I'm suggesting is that government won't do anything that they perceive will harm economic growth. People like flying and people like a bit of meat. If you change a cow's gut bacteria to something akin to that of a kangaroo which eats and digests grass much like a cow you can reduce Methane emissions by 80%.

It is still simple. Offer the tax incentive and those who can manage their affairs without one get the tax break. Those who can't or choose not to have to pay or adapt. Was the scrappage allowance fair and universal or was it aimed at a certain demographic.

We’ve only ever had one car I live close to work and don’t see the point in having another, I’m quids in. 👍
Sorted, buy another half dozen scrappers, get rid of them, then you’ll get the tax break x 6 if they do it per car, may even be the government owes you a rebate then

Giving up the right to own something which has a large carbon footprint in its manufacture and an enduring one during its lifetime and disposal is a virtuous thing surely and rewarding behaviour which is socially useful is the way forward imo.

People don't change bad habits easily. Reward and punishment are good motivators though.

work

It's the second time I've been over there in a month

They won't pay to offset my carbon... I've been all over the place this year
Don’t feel guilty then it’s not your fault. But companies are going to have to start doing this, it’s part of the change we need I recently had to do a business trip to Amsterdam- train, which I much prefer anyway - was £400, flight was £130. I simply couldn’t justify the train on that cost.

What is this tax break on scrappers? Our car is about a million years old and we could do with a new one (leccy or hybrid).

In the new world of people being given tax breaks for not having a car, renewing your old car won’t make you better off tax wise, you gotta give it up

That Kia electric one when it comes out will be a game changer if the miles quoted are correct on a full charge.

Hmm might look into this. Is it different from SORN?

I'm all for freedom of choice mate. If you want a tax break you have to accept the limitations that imposes but you also have the freedom to spend thousands on having your own little box.

It's an occasional incentive mainly designed to stimulate new car sales . I think Vauxhall have their own scheme currently offering 3k above trade in value for one of their cars.

Allocate people air miles to be used for travel per year. If they want to go long haul let them save over a couple of years or so.
Would also revitalise the uks tourist industry.
I had the same conversation with my daughter. Everyone in the world gets x miles per year. People in poor countries can sell their miles to people who want them. Air travel restricted and wealth goes from rich to poor. The world is no longer just a free playground anymore. Imho.
The thing is it always boils down to the economy and the holy grail of economic growth. Everything is tied in to this and decisions to limit growth will never be made by governments. They'll put taxes on everything to discourage the poorest people from using planes and cars and they'll tax carrier bags and plastic drinks bottles but they won't really do anything that hinders economic growth. Until that is challenged there's little to no hope of any progress on climate change.
100%

There are thousands of decisions we all make that affect the yse of carbon. Nobody really gives a fuck imho.
Is the right answer, people will think their green but still buy goods from far flung places, fly on numerous flights a year and eat whatever they like. some may even soothe their notional guilt by paying a few quid to offset their carbon footprint but generally speaking we as a world aren’t ready to make any proper changes yet

Carbon offset is a sop to people who want their cake and eat it. It's nonsense imho.

Makes those who do it feel a little snug though while they are still consuming goods like a goodun though
Disagree. It’s hard to be fully carbon neutral even after lots of lifestyle changes. Not everyone can afford to replace their gas central heating with electric for example. Carbon offsetting has a role to play.
