Are we a better side than last season?

As You Were

Midfield
I don’t think we are. Willis and Mcnulty have improved us slightly in those areas but I feel the loss of Oviedo,James and Cattermole has weakened in different areas. Credit to Ross for 3 wins on the trot but we have the look of just a play off team again. Two or three good signings would make all the difference, we can’t just keep relying on mcgeady.

Willis has addressed a massive problem of no pace at the back, and mcnulty and a fit Wyke are stronger than what we had post Maja last season.

A solid full back and a quick, strong forward would probably leave us a bit stronger than last season....Still might not be enough for automatic tho.

Doesn't matter whether we are or not, what matters is getting 3 points and so far we seem far more capable than last year of doing that.

FWIW I've always thought Oviedo was shit.
But the question is if we lose mcgeady like we did last season through injury would we still win games?

We're a lot worse than we were 12 months ago. The performances in the first half against Scunthorpe and Gillingham in the early stages of last season were far better than anything we've put together so far this season.

Bit of a generalisation, but last season we were relying on screamers, goals outside the box and incredible finishes by Maja.

This year 3/6 of our goals have been inside the 6 yard box, tapped in by Gooch Maguire and wyke.

I think there is a difference there, some things haven't changed, we still can't keep a clean sheet. But we're making more or less unmissable chances with regularity, which goes a long way to getting the 2 goals we seem to need to win

Willis is a huge improvement on what we had. Ozturk playing well compared to start of last year is a huge positive as well, he played at the end of the season only last year. McNulty looks promising but it’s still too early to tell. Wyke is fit this season which is a big plus in this league. Maja is a miss, Grigg has been a huge disappointment but he needs service.

We need a left back but James is seriously no loss, was v v poor, Oviedo was best left back we had but came no where close to justifying his salary.

Cattermole is a miss but again couldn’t justify his wages in this league, was hopeful about Dobson but little opportunity to judge.

Long ramble I think we are slightly better mainly due to improvement at centre backs but to be honest we only failed to go up last year due to injury to McGeady, keep him fit and we’ll be fine.

Huge shame that James left in hindsight. Thought nothing of it at the time thinking Ross and our scouting team would have better in mind (and all over the park for that matter). Turns out they didn’t, and although he was just a consistently solid if unspectacular left back at this level it’s far better than what’s being served up there now. Willis is an improvement at centre back just for his pace but we are still crying out for a dominant centre back. Another issue is that I feel there are teams that have strengthened well like Coventry, good teams have come down and up into the division and we have stood still or are slightly worse off. Off the pitch mirrors on it, no plan or urgency.
