Pennywell

I have no idea, I only lived there for a year and that was back in 1963, it was a good, well looked after estate back then, I only know what I've been told by mates that lived there and watched it's decline.
There was a lot of slum clearance during the 60s. I know my Aunt moved from Deptford to Thorney Close during that time. A lot of the East End was also cleared.

If the folk are good, you’ll be lucky to get a clean glass and fresh smelling air.

Take my dad in there for a pint every Friday night and nearly always(*) found it fine. Staff are fine and they look after my dad well. Never had a problem with the beer either but there's not a lot you can do wrong with a pint of Smiths.

(*) A bunch of young lads were acting themselves one week but they were told to leave. I saw them outside the Railway Tavern a bit later that evening with a cop car outside.

When did it turn a bit dodgy? Remember in the late 70s was always a bit of a no-go for us softies.

Can recall Woolies being there and a decent shopping centre.
Loved it when i was a kid, was a great place.

That was the 60's, the estate was fine then, the scummers moved in in the mid to late 70's. I knocked about with a few lads from Pennywell up until 1972, and it was ok then.

Who was the fat fuck?

It was aimed at the negative posters of this thread who never ventured and heard it all third hand mate not my/our people. It was the first and probably only time in a week we use to see a shower, so we all got our chuckies out at pennywell PE😉
It was a shithole, I remember watching a house fire that claimed the life of a little lass, awful place with awful people in the 80's.

Quite a few more unfortunately, RIP there souls.

It didn’t. It was no worse than anywhere else, I lived there for 15 years through the 70s etc went to matches with lads from in and around plawsy sq. Loads of people with nowt to do because of the mass unemployment then.
I went to pennywell comp and seem to remember a teacher called peggy Johnson who was a bit loopy, can’t remember if she was a PE teacher or not, oh and our house master Mr Knowles – affectionately known as Knolla who wore a brown suit all the time I was there. iirc miss Langford who was an art teacher was a massive WAD don’t think she was their long though.

My grandparents moved there from Gladstone street/Roker when they were first built. Was apparently a lovely safe place, until they started moving problem families from the East end in! Started a steady decline!

My Nana lived on Penny cross road. Got to say, I always felt safe as a kid, when going up to visit her in the 70's/80's!
