Striker
Got a 7 month old lab, he’s a big lad now and strong as out.

My back is giving me gip and struggle to contain him due to pulling on the lead, tried 3 different harnesses and a choke chain. The only thing that works is the head halti that goes around his mouth and over his nose, however he hates it with a passion and will find the nearest piece of grass, lie down and try to get it off.

Any advice for something different that will stop him pulling? What do you use? Any links would be appreciated.

ours pulls like a steam train but luckily she`s not big enough to pull the skin off a rice pudding yet. you looked at some classes to get his heelwork sorted while he`s still young?

I`m finding this lot useful at the moment

Get your husband to take him for a walk.

Get a lead with a built in shock absorber.

That’s more for absorbing when dogs bolt, if they are doing it constantly it’ll not be much use.

The OP needs to teach the dog to walk to heel. Labs should be easy to train to do it. There’s plenty of YouTube videos how to do it.

What worked for mine, and worked quickly, was take them out and when they pull turn round and walk in the opposite direction (they hate it). Keep doing it, you get nowhere and look like a loon covering a few yards in either direction, but it did the job.
This^ I'm getting a rottie pup next month and the breeder suggested you do this if they start pulling on the lead - a harness will probably make it worse.

thats the classic way of doing it isnt it? not taking the piss but its the way a lot have reccomended over the years

Consistency in your heel work. Constant use of rewarding good behaviour. Always use a short lead over your body to the dogs using two hands.

Aversive training has very poor results in dogs. Using a choke collar won’t teach the dog to stop pulling.

Take the dog to behavioural classes if you’ve tried all the traditional methods.
