RAF advice

Morning,

My 18yr old went for his RAF test yesterday and did ok, in fact one mark from the various engineering options that he was really after. However he still has various options, he is seriously considering 'Survival Equipment Specialist' and 'Intelligence Analyst'. Just wondering if anyone of you have experience of this? And whether these could be useful if/when he leaves service and enters civilian life.

Other options that he can do include 'Firefighter', 'PTI', 'Personnel Support' and 'Pharmacy Technician'

Cheers

Firefighting is fucked as a career over here so don’t bother with that.

If he's interested in engineering the first one is probably the closest to it of the ones you listed.
If he only missed out by one point is there no chance of a resit?
i'd go for intelligence analyst, loads of stuff around that he could do when he leaves.
Intelligence analyst would be a good one to have on the CV. Good analysis skills are always in demand.
It's basically reading stuff then summarising it. Not a very interesting job tbh.
Avoid Pharmacy technician anyway. Very underpaid in civvi street.
But if it leads to a pharmacy qual they get a decent wedge.

Cheers. He has to wait 6 months for a resit, wouldn’t care, it was multiple choice questions and he ran out of time, even if he’d guessed the last couple of questions he might have got the one mark he needed!
Just wondering whether the Survival Equipment Specialist role could lead to other skills eventually, involving health and safety maybe or rope access work for example.

Tell him to contact recruitment to say he's been offered a job but would rather retake the test and join the RAF.

Personally Id resit... I passed mine but wanted to get in quicker and ended up becoming a Data Analyst (got some bloody good postings out of that but not much use in civvy street for working out the fatigue stress of a Tornado or bombing statistics.).. anyhoo... if he didnt want to resit, intelligence analyst. He can always re-muster to another trade at a later date if he wanted to. Airframes Tech would be my choice if I had the choice again

Some decent jobs in the police around stuff like that I think though.
Depends what interests him I suppose.

You still need a skill for this.
Rope Access is only a means to get onto the job (the dopes on the ropes did away with a lot of scaffolding work offshore) - then the skill that the person has takes over to do the job in question.

Nope, aircraft avionics is where the money is when you leave.
