FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

Another enthralling day and if it was anyone other than Smith at the crease the odds would be massively in our favour.

What are the odds of Paine not making it to the end of the series and the captaincy being returned to Smith? The latter seems to be calling the shots left right and centre.

We’re 4/6 on Betfair. Staggering.

Not staggering for me, there's a number of posters here who are making this pitch out to be a complete minefield. We'll see how it goes over the next 24 hours but Australia themselves are 124/3 given also Warner and Bancroft chucked their wickets away. You can still score well on this surface if you play well. Its not falling apart with big wide open cracks.

It’s far from a minefield, but it’s turned enough to know we’ll have to bat extremely well again, to chase whatever they set. We didn’t score quickly, albeit the gameplan was obviously to bat time, but theyve come out and gone at 4 an over. I’m not confident we’ll be able to do the same and in order to have anything chase-able as a target, we’ve got to get Captain Cheat out which we seem incapable of .....and then the rest of them cheaply, while being a man, and our best bowler of all time, down. I’m amazed we’re odds on like, but I’m normally wrong so pray I am here as well .

34/3 technically. ;)

That was an even worse selection than Ali. Same injury as Sedbergh, clearly should not have been passed fit.

Agreed. Australia in front for me. 300+ and they will win. Gary won't bowl as poorly as Moeen.
I fear the worst like, massively. To think we’ve had our foot on their throat a couple of times and couldn’t kill them off and let them get back up/they’ve scrapped their way back up is so infuriating and typical of them.

Can’t see past Smith being the difference again sadly. He averages 145 vs England. Don’t see how an attack without Anderson is going to shift him. It’s not just his ribs either, it’s the fact that he grinds an attack down to being totally flaccid

Typical of us not to finish them or crack on when we were in such a good position also

Moeen was really poor this afternoon I thought. Barely spun it. Lyon will do more. I don’t fancy us chasing more than 160 on this pitch fourth innings.
I think they'd do well to give us a chase over 150, Smith is stupidly good mind
Bloody irritating. Whips almost everything through mid wicket. Looks impregnable. We need somehow to get him out early tomorrow.
These tactics from Root are f***ing baffling mind. Giving both batsmen easy as fuck singles
We leaked far too many runs today. That Roy overthrow was just one example
