FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

There are 12 "elite" umpires of which 7 are English or Convict so can't stand in this series. So I'm afraid we're stuck with these two, Erasmus, Dharmasena and Chris Gaffney.

Would be a massive psychological boost for everyone if the top order could get us to a 300/4 type position. Just to prove our top order isnt totally garbage. Need to keep at it and will get a good chance to pile the runs on later in the day.

Dharmasena is every bit as bad as these on show today aswell.

I think Smith showed the way to go on on this pitch (which isnt a bad marker for test cricket batting in general tbf) and these two, albeit with a hint of luck along the way, are reaping some of the rewards at present. This definitely looks a better day to bat than yday as well.

On another note, I think Siddle has looked decent. Keeps things tight and doesn't bowl many pies.

Nice Test Batting. Do it for another day and we’ll be in a commanding position.

Requires Root to not do what he has become accustomed to doing and being dismissed for a lovely 50-80. If he goes big here we will be in a very commanding position. Psychologically, I don’t think we can afford to lose the Edgbaston test. Going 1-0 down without our stronghold to fall back on would be tough going.

Even a draw would be a worry at Edgbaston for me.

Root and Test openers in general have been guilty the past few years of going for it as soon as they’re past about 30, all playing as though they’re 4’s or 5’s. Lose sight of the pressure that simply being at the crease and waring down the attack exerts
