FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

I'm probably negative but the selection of Jimmy and our laughable batting will see us lose by 100.

I'm being the voice of doom mind seeing as I'm on holiday and seen very little.

A great day's play and a great day for Test Cricket.

Really was first class tbh.
I think we're on top.

But we need to get a lead, because it's turning a bit already and Lyon has something over us, so don't much fancy chasing 200 with out batting.

i think we're on top though, could have been a lot better - but think we have the edge because Paine made a bad call. Was a bowling day -it staggers me how captains continually make calls based on the pitch (which is guesswork) but seem to think making calls on the weather (which isn't guesswork for at least three days) is a punt in the dark. The pitch may have said bat first, because whilst it was more nibbly today I think it'll go flat then slow before turning a fair bit on day four and five. But the weather forecast said: day 1 and day three are swinging days, day two is set fair. So day two is the best day to bat - and we need to run em up, before swinging them out on day three.
Moeen will get a few second innings, so not too worried about Jimmy. It's all a balancing act, but having Jofra in might make for a more balanced attack going forward. Certainly, those tailenders would have been less f***ing cocksure when batting with Smith with Joffers around.

Root thought he had it won at 130/8 and took his foot off the gas. Then panicked and chucked any auld shit down when the crims got a partnership going.
We were a 1st choice bowler short by then. Mind I thought it was a big mistake to select Anderson, good as he is he’s too old for a 5 day test
That said, allowing the last two wickets to put on 170 runs is appalling

Disappointing from the position we were in, although definitely would have taken that at 11am, which is the real judge of the day. Shame with Jimmy, although still happy with this position

300 was par. The betting odds suggested so, if Australia had gotten 350+ it would have been their day no arguments.

I think England are marginally ahead but its pretty close.

A lot rests on whether Jimmy returns, if he doesn't and comes down to just Woakes and Broad again, it will be another tough shift for them and Australia will fancy their chances.

All this happy to still be in it shite . Allowing them to get to 284 from 122/8 was nothing short of criminal, considering our weak batting line up. The lack of any plan to deal with Smith, was yet again, embarrassing. They couldn't even get the bloke off strike to bounce out Lyon. Before this series started I said Leach should play because slow left arm orthodox is about the only thing Smith has issues with and hey presto they drop the twat.

Meanwhile, pick a half fit James Anderson who gets himself injured after four overs and Root ends up having to bowl Stokes, an impact bowler, for 18 overs of throw downs. The physios must have known there was a risk on Anderson. We could have had Curran as a left arm option to mix it up.

We are going to have to turn in a proper batting performance that we haven't seen for a long time to win this game when it should have been in the bag.

Yes, it's the Ashes, test cricket, day one and all that but that is really disappointing man.

Doubtful. Things quickly get forgotten, especially when batting like that.
I think Smith will have a better chance of leaving more of a cricketing legacy when he retires than Warner, who has always come across as an obnoxious twat and most likely the instigator of the whole thing. He will most definitely be remembered as a cheat.

For Smith's batting, it's not just the runs, it's the type of innings he puts in, taking Australia from 122/8 to a competitive total batting with the tail is so much more than just scoring a big hundred.

Totally agree. He's not a very pleasing player on the eye tbh but s such a tough wicket to get. It's why I compared him with Chanderpaul. Dorsnt really have textbook movements and shuffles across his stumps a lot, but churns out the runs. Where he differs mind is he is more adaptable to situations.

Well this was predictable.
I knew they wouldn’t get Smith out, well until he’d hurt us, and that we’d have difficulty with the tail.
We’ve been hopeless for a while now removing the tail.
We’ll lose this. Pessimistic I know.

If they manage to beat us at Edgbaston, especially from the position they were in, then fair play the Aussies.
