You do realise, as much as there is bullshit flying about, free speech is the only thing that keeps us from totalitarianism from a corrupted state :) You literally just advocated a big corporation, fuckin google, dictating the narrative :)
People can chat freely, just not post outright lies. Fair compromise

Wasting police time is a criminal offense and something like this really ought to fit the criteria, especially given the severity of it and the resources they had to deploy.

There is no such thing as free speech in the UK

Glad the whole thing was a hoax / misunderstanding (maybe) and hope no one that needed the emergency services lastnight was impacted by the incident

I sincerely think that deep down, the real reason people are so against things like this being shared on Facebook is bitterness and a a false feeling of superiority towards those sharing.

A lot of what ifs there. Of course some information is going to be wrong sometimes, but the point is it has worked and even if only 1 person has been found it’s worth it.

Don’t forget the police get wrong information from other sources as well, not just Facebook. Part of their job is filtering through the shit to get the facts.

I find it absolutely baffling that so many people are against it, let’s just hope none of your family members go missing as surely you’d prefer them to stay missing than to have the community try to help.

I disagree with you and its nothing to do with bitterness or superiority.
Sharing official sources is fine.
Sharing some persons unfounded claims is a bit daft/risky to me.

"If it's worked for 1 person it has been worth it" - maybe for that person but not true. What about people who share "missing" people where they arent missing and its an attempt to locate someone they shouldn't be in contact with, Eg a person considered a risk to another person. Or a hoax. How do you sift through the genuine stuff from this when you're sharing these things, you can't.

"Police job filtering through the shit to get to the facts" - yes it is but that's going to take up a fair amount of resources when its shared thousands and thousands of times. This case being a classic example. There were loads of claims posted on Facebook. Every one of them false as this thing never happened.

As for your last comment, if my family go missing, I'd report them as missing to police. I'd then share that info. No one is against that I dont think. That's very different to posting something a child has told you theyve seen as absolute fact, claiming it nearly happened to your daughter, then deleting comments when people question what you're saying.

A very important point. In their desperation to 'save' children, the people on social media, no matter how well intentioned, could be putting children in danger.

Just been on Twitter and someone, with the best intentions, shared it a minute ago. This is going to run for years.

Hopefully utter bullshit for everyone's mad aunts on Facebook to occupy their Saturday night with.

Contacting Paddy Power to ask for a price on a menopausal woman with a vast collection of 'Why Daddy Why?' genre books making this up along with their other weekly posts on FB of malevolent vans that no one else sees.

As someone who went through the menopause a few years back now I'd just like to say fuck off ;)

I can understand the sentiment of you as a parent wanting to share but really what good does it do when everyone sharing it is just sat in the house or pub on a Saturday night probably half cut ?

I wonder if anyone has actually gone out and had a drive around to look for the van or is it just gossiping really and spreading rumours ? Serious question what is the point at this stage when no one has reported a kid even missing ?

Sharing it in far flung corners of the UK is equally baffling me , people have even shared photos of a kid that has been missing from the US for years just trying to get some odd buzz from the attention ?

Like and share if you agree imo.

Update from
@NPSuptKWilson
thanking public for support after child abduction investigation stood down. Officers have carried out thorough investigation and are satisfied the incident did not occur

Great news. No kid missing and the Spacebook bellends shown up.

It’s a great way of keeping in touch with friends and judging people mate.

Or it’s a constant feed of utter drivel if you add a load of bored wifeys like @look out piano.

Will probably just be some drama-queen women getting the wrong end of the stick
