George Dobson

Okay, forget the wee jock for the moment.
Let's consider some possible attributes of a holding midfielder for example -
Physical strength/determination/good in the air/pace/fitness/stamina, crunching tackles and so on....

Okay, let's not and just think about the wee jock again.

When McGeouch played it was noticeable that he would make himself available to the defenders to pass to him and not punt it aimlessly upfield. I can't remember any of our other midfield doing this when McGeouch didn't play.

A small thing?...maybe, but at least it kept the ball on the ground (where we play at our best) and not up in the air to come straight back.

He's a good little player, I don't see why you've got so much beef with the lad.

I have no problem with one of our CMs showing for the ball and keeping it moving going sideways or even backwards...... our problem has been that's what they all do pretty much. McGeouch is fine with the right player alongside.
Our only player who always shows for the ball, hence when he played we actually kept it on deck. Also reads the game best of our midfielders. Doesn’t go flying into tackles or try 40 yard raking passes every time so some don’t rate him, bizarre. Would much rather lose robson, power or honeyman than him.

No think it is interesting my conclusion is sign Dobson asap ,wary on Maddison at 2.5 mill
This for me, much that Maddison would be a signal of intent I'd rather get the next lad that can perform to that standard for peanuts. I'd welcome his signing but not convinced he'd be great value long term.
Totally different with Dobson, he already looks very effective and can probably only get better.

Dobson looks effective but Maddison doesn’t? His stats over recent years are outstanding.

Very effective but not sure he'll get any better and if the clause really is 2.5m that's a massive fee at this level. Clubs just don't pay that money for players that are possibly only league on standard and already in their mid twenties. Except us with Grigg! As I said I'd welcome him but I think we could quite possibly use the fee more effectively.

Fair point.

I think if we had genuine interest and he wanted to come, we’d get him for less than the reported release clause.

I agree with this.
I think SD might be wary of spending what would be another astronomical amount of money in L1 terms for one player again.
The fee we paid for Grigg seemed to be a very expensive gamble attempting to guarantee promotion. In that respect it failed (although hopefully we’ll see more from him this season).
I feel with that he won’t want his fingers burnt again.
If we can get Maddison for less then maybe but otherwise it’s daft money for this level.
