Jamal Lowe.

Personally I am really not happy with the way we’ve folded like a pack of cards on this one.

Clarke had a PL opportunity and Nathan Thompson was out of contract, so those 2 leaving I can understand.

The Lowe one is really tough to take given he’s going to a bottom 6 Championship side. He may want to leave just to ‘be in the Championship’, but he’s got 2 years left, and there is no chance you can replace 17 goals and 10 assists with our wage structure. Maddison, Enobakhare etc provide no guarantee of those stats.

Him leaving genuinely turns optimism for automatic promotion into a ‘is top 6 even achievable’. We’ll miss him more than Clarke, even though Clarke is pound for pound the better player.
After your play off first leg defeat at our place, I was talking to a Pompey fan on the train home.
I said to him that Lowe would leave Pompey, and he seemed resigned to losing most of your better players, and not bringing in sufficient quality to replace those that are leaving, your club.

tbf i cant understand if he goes there, imo shows lack of ambition,if was any other top 8 club up there id understand .

Massive, massive loss for us. Takes us from being a better squad than last year to a worse one. Just hope we can get a good replacement.

As it stands, of our presumed first eleven only 4 were playing for us last year (McGillivray, Brown, Naylor and Curtis). May be good to get fresh blood after how we fell short at the end of last year, but may be too big a change too quickly.

I’m really cross we aren’t pushing the boat out to keep him more personally, even though he does want to leave. Selling him is a false economy for me. See Josh Maja vs Patrick Bauer last season as a case study.

You sold Maja, as he wanted out and had to spend more on a replacement that didn’t have anything like the same output. Conversely, Lee Bowyer turned down a written transfer request from Bauer when Blackburn wanted him for 2m. Bowyer knew he’d likely lose him for nothing in the summer - he’s gone to PNE on a free since - but forgoing that 2m was worth it.

There’s a massive difference in club size between Blackburn/Preston and Bordeaux TBF.

Well that seems to be the case with the replacements though I think we were overall stronger until this news.

We needed 4 new players had everyone stayed, so I think Downing, McCrorie, Williams and Harrison would have been well received and generally have been. On their own, they’d have made us stronger.

As for the 2 like for like replacements, Bolton for Thompson is an inferior replacement on paper. He’s only been signed because we failed to go up. There wasn’t a better centre back in this league than Matt Clarke, and that’s been proven to be the case by his PL suitors and move. Nobody at all begrudged him that. Raggett has been brought in to replace him.

That said, Bolton and Raggett may not be as good on paper, but they are here to improve our defensive record which went to shit in the 2nd half of the season, so there’s a belief about fans that those 2 will add to a better defensive unit, even if they aren’t as classy on the ball.

But Lowe isn’t replaceable in L1 and as Chave has said, and I agree 100 percent with him, Lowe going leaves us from looking stronger to looking much weaker. It’s very rare the loss of one player can do that, but that’s the case with us I feel.

Yes agreed, but both wanted to leave all the same. Bauer actually handed in a written transfer request in an attempt to force the move through. Yet he stayed and got his team promoted before moving on a year later on a free, despite not being totally happy. Hence the ‘false economy’ comment.

I agree with your comment's regarding Lowe leaving, leaves your team looking weaker.
He didn't show himself in the best light in the two games at our place last season, throwing himself to the floor to win free kicks and trying to get our players booked.
I know he's better than that, and on his day; is definitely an asset you could ill afford to lose.
Whatever money you get for him, probably won't be enough to buy a replacement of the same quality as Lowe.

Any chance of jack whatmough stepping into Clarke’s shoes? Was highlighted rated before his injury right?

If Jack Whatmough can get himself fit, then absolutely. He’s not as good as Clarke on the ball, but he’s an absolute monster at the back for a fairly small lad (just over 6ft).

He’s had 3 serious knee injuries now though, and won’t be making any appearances at all until January. Given that the season is then well in full flow, it’s unlikely he’ll play much. Will be Downing and Raggett with Burgess in reserve.

Massive reliance on these two to both hit the ground running for you. Hard to replace Matt Clarke, and obviously, neither of those won't be able to. Think Raggett is the biggest question mark - struggled since leaving Lincoln and could go either way. Then add Lowe leaving on top - it's going to be a tougher season for you

Might just be me but I think Lowe is overrated, last season he obviously scored plenty for his position but his assist record was only marginally better than Gooch and I'd be far from confident in him repeating his one in three goal ratio, his previous season he only scored six in 44. I'm not sure he'd be that difficult to replace.
