Changing prisons the way to stop re offending

Well, let's write these people off at 22 then eh Fuck em, they had their chance

60 more years of crimes and prison sounds like a plan to me.

Fucks sake.

They can surely enrol in one of many education courses/trades?

Nail on head. For me a big deterrent (but not the only one!) for NOT punching people or speeding is those exact possible consequences and ultimately a spell inside. I’d only ever smack somebody out of desperate self-defence for fear of them smacking their head on the pavement.

Yet how many morons don’t (or can’t) even think that through? You see loads of punch-ups and speeding is rife.

Spoken to stacks of lads on the inside who've made stupid every day mistakes. Not condoning it, as the punishment they deserve is jail, just fucked off with the holier than thou attitude by some.

Jesus some absolute shite spewed early on in this thread.

Actual prisoners are coming out and describing jail as easy, like a holiday camp and no deterrent, full of drugs & gangs, staff have no power ... but no, liberals on here know differently

I remember some moron on here saying a while back that prison officers don't smuggle and supply contraband

Please don’t mix up common sense and decent behaviour with a holier than thou attitude. Millions of people avoid such “stupid every day mistakes”.

Yep, it's because Muffin has compared Norway, who likely have a prison population the size of a large comprehensive school, little crime and little immigration. It's just not comparable in any way shape or form.
Immigrants make up nearly 17% of the Norwegian population. More than any EU state.

They can and do. I'm referring to the folks who tar everybody in prison with the same brush. There are decent folks in there, done silly things but still decent people. Then there are the ones who have had absolutely fuck all chance in life with the circumstances they were dealt when they were kids, if you're around attitudes every day at a young age, it's gonna develop you as a person.

The reason for this is the government had absolutely raped the prison budget for years. Lot of old school officers have left and they are very much out numbered. Any prison wing in this country is so depleted on staff, the prisoners could take it any time they wanted. They are more or less ran on goodwill now. Something the average pundit on the street cannot grasp.

I see the difference and I get your point. I don’t doubt there are some decent lads in prison along with those who have grown up in dreadful homes.

However, my point still stands. Killing a pedestrian when speeding, drink driving and punching somebody who then falls and cracks his head open are all utterly avoidable offences. Millions of people manage not to do these things in their lives.

And you're missing my point. I'm saying anybody who has had a punch up, sped, used recreational drugs or as you've brought it into the equation drink driving has zero authority to comment on "locking them up and throwing away the key"

Ah OK. Fair enough.

I haven’t, personally but neither do I advocate life sentences other than for the most serious avoidable crimes.

Heard this on radio 4 but all I could think about was the victims
Fck the prisoner

Not as simple as that. The problem is people see prison as a punishment only - it isn’t.

Prisoners don’t magically disappear, they’re released back into society and if they don’t rehabilitate themselves and reintegrate then they’ll end up back inside or being unproductive in society - this does not benefit us.

Prisons should of course punish offenders, but they must also rehabilitate offenders and equip them to be productive in society again.

Punishing them too hard, grinding them down or denying them basic rights or writing them off, like you’ve done there, does not work.

Perhaps I’m being holier than thou in saying this but I’m only doing so coz I find it interesting that at my age The only times I’ve ever talked to someone who’s been to prison was in a work or volunteering capacity. I’ve led a sheltered low-risk life me.

And I’ve only spent one night in a jail cell myself. I didn’t get any rehabilitation like.

I work in the system mate, so spend 90% of working week around prisoners. System is broken, only thing that can fix it is massive investment by government. More chance of me getting Kelly Brook to slurp me off
