Line of Duty series 5

Just saying you in the minority mate in criticising two of the most popular shows on tv in recent years.

Which is why there is a even thread about them, if there were no good there would not be a thread about them in the first place.

Your other words about tv snobs and not comprehending people enjoy them are made up assumptions on your part
Have you ever been on the SMB before?
Popular is not always a benchmark for quality. Out of interest, out of all the criticisms made on this thread or in the Guardian article, which ones do you disagree with?

People are entitled to their opinions and that’s fine.

Where as popular does not always mine quality,it is certainly a good indicator.

Your point about The Bodyguard been shit was obviously disagreed with by millions.

And if it was shit like you say then the amount of people simply would not have watched it!

In your opinion if the bodyguard was shit why did soo many tune in to watch it?

As for Line of Duty it is fair to say that the current series was not as good as earlier ones.

However what percentage of people after starting this series of watching episode 1 will have stop watching and not watched episode 6, very very few imo because it was still a very good watch!

Shit is shorthand for the many valid criticisms I, and many others, made on the thread. I'm glad you enjoyed it but as a fan of BBC drama, I look for a little bit more.
Many people like Love Island and Big Brother. Gangnam style has been viewed over 3 billion times on YouTube. My argument is that BBC drama has always been a benchmark of quality, and a series that was previously excellent has been dumbed down to appeal to a wider audience who need everything spelled out to them. It shouldn't always be about chasing the numbers and they should have stuck to what made it great in the first place.

The majority of TV viewers love soaps like Corrie, should that also be immune to critique?

That was terrible tbf.

Corrie.

You're right, very few as people wanted to know who H was. I bet ratings go down the shitter next time it's on. Even if they don't, that won't mean it's good, Corrie has had high ratings for half a century or more and is largely shite.

Well there is massive difference between shit and valid criticisms a massive difference.

Where of course your point about Love Island is a valid one there is also plenty of examples of quality programmes attracting more viewers through word of mouth due to the quality of that actual programme.

So you can look at it both ways ,for example people must have been gong to work etc telling other people the bodyguard was good hence the growing viewing figures.

Once again can see some the points about LOD, however when you compare to other programmes it still stands up as a good watch imo.

It used to be good though, very good imo.

Now it's just heavily signposted stuff that's occasionally entertaining. Anyone could be the bad guy, nobody knows, not even the writer.

I don’t Corrie and bodyguard are largely shit based on my previous point.

Corrie would simply not have lasted the test of time if shit and the bodyguard was clearly enjoyed by plenty.

If programmes like dramas and soaps are shit they simply taken of the telly there is loads of examples

There is difference between criticism and been shit a massive massive difference.

Being shit you mean? Corrie has been terrible since day one, it's a soap, it's popular, but still shit. The Bodyguard made even Jim McDonald seem realistic. Mother of God.

Each to their own, at least you get to watch plenty of hours of Corrie each week.

Have not watched it for years but my point remains dramas and soap operas if shit would be taken off the telly, so they both clearly not shit.

Nonsense. The TV is full of long running shite. That doesn't make it good. Popular maybe, but not good.

I'm no TV snob, I watch a load of stuff many people would consider shit.

So a TV programme runs 50 years because it’s shit!!

Yep that makes total sense!

In the case of Corrie, it was marvellous at one point but isn't any more (Eastenders is similar to a lesser degree). With Line of Duty, it's gone from a fairly low key but accurate police drama to very enjoyable hokum. Bodyguard - started off great but ended up daft. People watch soaps out of loyalty and there's a degree of that with dramas. I've watched Line of Duty for five series now. Series 1 and 2 were/are tremendous, series 3 was looking better than either but did a minor shark jump at the end. It's still enjoyable but it started as Reservoir Dogs and now it's How to Train Your Dragon. (I was going to say Transformers but that franchise was never enjoyable)

Got to say mind, see what saying with some points, but don't think people watch anything out of loyalty if shit!

Apart from Sunderland football club :D

Couldn’t get away from the fact that final episode thought it was a masterful unravelling of intricate plot points rather than pointing out things that had been obvious since episode 3 at least.

The most impressive thing about LOD at its best is that no-one is ever an archetype, everyone has their dark corners and uncertain elements that leave them vulnerable or plausible. But that lass running the interrogation was pushing the poisonous ambition speedometer for something like Game of Thrones, let alone this. The fact she was still trying to get Ted after Gill was caught man. Glad her weird elf sidekick got dunked on.

Of course Gill was dodgy as fuck. This was established in series 3 and emphasised by her continuing to act dodgy as fuck throughout this one. How the fuck did that Chucky the Living Doll lass get a knife through security? And the fact that she was literally willing to kill Gill at the cost of her own life? Fuck off.

Lisa was a weird red herring. Did she just cry after John died and Maneet got sentenced to death because it was traumatic or something? Is that what counts as character building this series? Up there with “Kate is late home sometimes and maybe a bad mum. Steve can’t get an erection and is sad. John loves his wife and kids and hates BENT COPPRZ”.

Ted got his balls back at least. Or rather he was nonsensically castrated throughout this series to act like a confused dad so that stupid people would think he was H. Homer giving the dogs shifty eyes in that episode of the Simpsons would have thought it too on the nose. The NI stuff was decent mind, enjoyed that.

At least with that obsession with Hastings done I can’t see how the final season can be any worse.

The real sad thing is that in chasing the whole H business it’s completely lost it’s identity. The H stuff worked because it *wasnt* the plot. It was an intriguing and interwoven backstory to rich, complex and detailed individual cases with their own unique aspects and plots.
Bingo

Less eloquently, it is absolute f***ing shit compared to what it used to be.

I just had to read that line with a Ted Hastings accent (I even added "Fella" at the end)............

hopefully they quit while ahead.. the last episode wasn't too great and this series has been the weakest so far IMO , still a decent watch but have ran out of ideas with it
