5:2 Diet

Can you do this while lifting or is it diet only?
Some people do. If you train in the morning in a fasted state you could eat afterwards between e.g. 09:00 and 17:00. I have tried it but I am hopeless lifting weights in the morning.

There are people on the running thread who run in a fasted state, I usually prefer to eat something up to 90 minutes before a run and I wouldn’t run over 6 miles in a fasted state.

If it’s helpful to anyone I’ve been doing the 16/8 ‘properly’ for the past 2 weeks and I’m amazed by the amount of energy that I’ve had.

I usually eat an evening meal at 8pm ish so I don’t eat again until 12-1pm the next day.

Yesterday I ate some yoghurt + fruit to break the fast at 1pm and went for a 3 mile run an hour later. I always thought that I needed plenty of fuel before any run but I managed a PB over that distance. Plus I did loads of walking over the day and was still full of energy at 10pm when I walked home from a quiz night.

I haven’t weighed myself but I feel like a racing snake.

So can the 8 hours be flexible to suit your lifestyle or is it best not to eat anything after a certain time?

Yes it can be any time, I posted a link where someone suggested 07:00 to 15:00 for the feeding ‘window’.

I have pasted this from the article that I linked to earlier on this thread.

4 ways to use this information for better health
  1. Avoid sugars and refined grains. Instead, eat fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats (a sensible, plant-based, Mediterranean-style diet).
  2. Let your body burn fat between meals. Don’t snack. Be active throughout your day. Build muscle tone.
  3. Consider a simple form of intermittent fasting. Limit the hours of the day when you eat, and for best effect, make it earlier in the day (between 7 am to 3 pm, or even 10 am to 6 pm, but definitely not in the evening before bed).
  4. Avoid snacking or eating at nighttime, all the time.

Done a couple of 24hr+ fasts recently, actually becomes very easy. Lots of water and keeping busy helps.

Decided to go for it after reading more about autophagy and the effects that longer fasting can have. Also, I'm still trying to get my weight down another few pounds before this jiu-jitsu competition in June.

None of my bastard clothes fit now which is an interesting side effect. I’ve gone from approx 35 inch waist to about 31.

A lady at work has lost a lot of weight and she told me today that a lot of fat went from her feet and that her shoes would fall off. Shoe width reduced by 3 sizes and length by 1. She also had to check in the mornings that her pantaloons wouldn’t fall down, by doing a funny wriggling dance.

Have you been meaning to cut your calories or has it just happened naturally as a result of the restricted eating window?

I wanted to reduce my body fat in time for a holiday later this month. By fasting until mid-day I haven’t been eating breakfast at weekends unless I go for a long run. I think that I can attribute most of the calorific reduction to the avoidance of chocolate and beer although I haven’t kept a detailed record. Plus I was doing weights and a lot of running but I’m scaling back the cardio.

I've only had red wine rather than beer since January, bar the odd occasion. Its definitely impacted my weight. I've been on a fat loss stage for about 6 weeks now and have another 6 to go,been pretty painless to be honest because I gave myself 12 weeks to lose 5lbs.

You should give a 24hr fast a go mate. You'd probably surprise yourself with how easy it is.
