Keane and Neville

He did much more than that though! It can't all be reduced to points. He turned the club around from a spiral of decline and gave it back it's self respect. His influence was huge.

He had one good season and then got us no more points than MON and Di Canio did. And in getting us promoted got us 6 points fewer than McCarthy.

In the process he started the ball rolling on paying way over the odds for players and tying down average players on massive contracts.

Toure (like Viera & Keane) was a box to box midfielder who could do it at both ends of the pitch. Pogba has all the physical attributes to be that type of player but sadly lacks the application.
What I was suggesting was that Toure also had a tendency to only turn it on when he felt like it. The pair of them could be world beaters on their day, it just depends how much they fancy it.

We were rock bottom when he took over and had just avoided the all-time record of a run of defeats iirc, mind. To get to to where he did that season was a hell of an achievement, like him or loathe him.

I don’t loathe him I just don’t get the whole love in for a bloke who did worse than McCarthy with a fuckload more money.

He didn't do worse, they were both promoted as Champions (he had less games than McCarthy but not sure what their respective games to points ratio was) and he kept us up, fairly comfortably the following season. McCarthy's team was an embarrassment in the top flight.

And as I say in the top flight he was one of our worst managers. 3 points more than Sbragia - someone who is virtually ridiculed on here.

Wank yourselves silly over the bloke if you like, he started spending the money we didn’t have and did no better than any of the managers that followed.

Do you blame him for spending money made available to him?

Who is wanking over the bloke? He got us up (remit achieved), kept us up (remit achieved) and raised our profile (remit achieved).
We ended-up an established top flight club for a decade and he started it.

….Keane and souness were right. Amazed Neville was making excuses for some poor full back play by both United's full backs. The most basic of basics is stopping your opponent shooting or crossing.

I also think this has a lot to do with when they both played together and Keane had a huge fall out after a game with Neville about him not closing attackers down during the World Club championships back in 2000 over in South America?... one game in particular when the by then ageing Romario was turning Neville inside out time after time, and resulted in Man Utd getting slaughtered by Vasco da Gama

That’s the Harry Redknapp defence and if I remember rightly he gets pilloried for it on here.
I think it depends on Keane's remit at the time TBH. He spent a lot of money on players to halt the slide in the Championship and get back in the premier league. Many of those players were not up to Premier League level but they did the job in getting them there. In many ways not too dissimilar to what Rafa The Great did when the Mags went down.
