Blessing in Disguise

When the owner is talking about how it would be better financially to stay in this league because the parachute payment would keep us in the black then that sort of thinking filters through everything.

Stewart Donald reveals why Sunderland's wage budget could rocket by £4million this summer
f***ing hell man
If we did by some chance go up with this squad, we’d be mid table at best, A small fortune would be needed to compete and these two boys haven’t got anywhere near that.
That team would be nowhere near mid table

This team would get thumped every other week in the championship.
Disappointed we've thrown two golden opportunities away this season which could have had us challenging for the title.
But failing to win in nearly half the games this season, after the money spent, smashing the league one record, just shows they aren't good enough.
I'd be amazed if we win the playoffs.

This team would get thumped every game but surely it wouldn't be this team.
We would buy other players.
Bad management imo.

We'd just draw 1-1 all the time imo

Got a funny feeling it wouldn't be the same squad in the Championship.

The most enjoyable season we had in recent memory I was told. Much better to be in League One winning every week rather than making up the numbers in the Premier League.
Much better to be in Division 1 drawing every other week.;)

It's hardly an amazing turnaround at all. The season before last Rotherham finished rock bottom of the championship and then got promoted again last season.

The least we could expect was the playoffs. If we don’t get promoted it will be a complete failure , similar to relegation last season.

totally disagree. the issues we had with finance and debt repayable.

players going on strike, disconnect between club and supporters with certain management decisions.

if it wasn't from ES we could have gone bust even though it was his fault in the first place.

literally had to get rid and build again but had to be done with timing.

we have no divine rights

where are Rotherham now. we don't need that, need to build and get better.

I and others can remember the remember the yo-yo days

Mods, can you rename the thread Suicide Central

The reason why its gone tits up is because there was little or no preparation.

"Can you guarantee promotion Jack"

"Och aye"

"Super, here's a bunch of fucked up players on ridiculous money. Start buying other club's castoffs and it's in the bag"

If we still had the debt the decline would have continued no doubt, but that being written off doesn't constitute a turn around in over a year. We haven't seen a turn around in the last year, what has happened is we are playing at a lower level. It could be argued if we fail to get promoted that is as big a failure as the relegation in the first place.

Every club that gets relegated has those issues, they are usually the reasons they get relegated in the first place. Many times the clubs in question get instantly promoted. Not because of some miraculous turn around, but because of the lower standard of the league they are in.

So can I. What's your point?

He's played well most of the season yet you want rid, stupid, simply f***ing stupid.
I never said I wanted rid.

Mcgeady? Fuck off man, you're f***ing clueless you mind.
You think he had a good game?

Star man Friday
So much so he had to be hauled off after standing there watching his man run by and double up on Oviedo. MOTM Friday was between Charlie Wyke and Lewis Morgan, and a nod for Cattermole too.

Spot on.

We have no clear plan, system, identity or philosophy. It just seemed to be 'buy the best that League One has to offer and we'll go up'. We spend something like £5m yet we are still struggling. Funnily enough, Donald tried to do this at Eastleigh to get them into the Football League. What we need it to have a plan in place like Southampton did. Invest in our academy and scout around Europe looking for young talent.

What about Rotherham?
They were a shambles in The Championship but got promoted at the first attempt but are struggling again. I could point out that Millwall did similar and are looking to stay up for a second season despite spending less in the last 2 season than we spent this year. Or that Blackburn have had a good season with Tony Mowbray as manager and the Venkys as owners.

I don't think anyone is expecting us to win back-to-back promotion but I think we expected to win promotion out of League One and look to build a squad over the next 2 season that will be able to mount a promotion push come the third season.

Burnley too. Both had solid strategies that built up teams from the ground up for sustained success.

Unfortunately vultures did for Southampton and Burnley's model depends on parachute payments but far more sophisticated than throwing fistfuls of cash at anyone who looks remotely interested.

Of course there's the possibility that Stew and Chaz are looking to flip the club for a profit so from their point of view any long term strategy would be a lot of time and effort for nothing.
