Notre Dame (Paris) on fire?

We better not give a penny of public funding. It is a shame that such an iconic building of historical value has suffered such a thing, but I agree, the homeless should get this as funding, if the government are going to give out cash.

The money will be provide elsewhere anyway, if we don't contribute.

to quote something I read earlier today. Shame Grenfell didn't have stained glass windows. Those poor fuckers could have done with a scrap of the money that's being talked about here

Give your money to Durham Cathedral instead.

The Catholic Church is one of the richest entities in the world. They could raise the money for an immediate rebuild within minutes. Yet there has been an influx of 3-figure million donations from rich benefactors. We should question their motives when it is not required.

Wonder what those poor sods who lost their relatives in the Grendel Tower fire must think of this. There was no public philanthropy of millions then for those poor ba**ards.

I find the motives fairly simple to see: French companies and rich French people seeking to score PR and political points in France. One indeed should be asking why UK corporations did not do the same for Grenfell, but there's ample reason not to conflate the two. I'll stay away from providing an answer to the latter question as it's pretty far afield of this thread.

Also there is not the great feeling for Grenfell as a building, one that most of the country did not know of until the fire. It was an ugly tower block. People have lost their homes and that is awful, I know how I would feel. However a large beautiful historic and iconic building like this is very different. How many millions of people have visited and wondered at the history and architecture of the place? I can understand the reaction to this compared to other house fires.

Fair point. Still bad taste that the absolutely minted Catholic Church hasn’t offered to bank roll this though.

I get why people want to donate to rebuilding such an amazing icon of human endeavour. I think it’s important that we save and restore our art and achievements and people saying it’s just a building are wrong, IMO. It’s much more than that.

But I also understand why people get pissed off when Grenfell don’t get money for basic human decency, and against €600m for a church, when the Catholic enterprise is already the richest organisation in the world is a little sickening in relation.

Shame the Catholics didn't think about that when they demolished an ancient Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter that was standing there so that they could stick up the Notre Dame in its place ... ;)
