Surely competitiveness means what toughest to win. Which brings me back to my original point. Can you name another sport where the favourite is regularly 10/1 and 50 plus players can win?

I was responding to comments about Golf being "more competitive". Which I believe is the case for the reasons I've outlined.

It depends on the sport. Rugby Union is much much easier to predict the outcome than football because of the factors involved.
I am sure the top tennis stars will be as competitive in mind set and dedication as top golfers. Just that in tennis a better player will win more often.
My point is that golf is a minority pastime. A very difficult and (at times) very enjoyable one.
I wouldn't have any golfer as best sportsman. It's just opinions.

Looking at betting odds is a bit of a red herring in terms of the subject being discussed. While I agree that golf is a very competitive sport if you look at it in terms of a level playing field, the fact that it doesn't rely much on athleticism (supported by the display of moobs over the last few days) means the spread of 'quality' is relatively small. Golfers often seem to improve through 'changing' their game, i.e. through practice and learning. The number who are roughly at the same level suggests that it is difficult to become outstanding. Although Woods is probably the greatest golfer it doesn't necessarily make him the greatest sportsman. Someone like Federer combines skill and athleticism to become a 'top dog' over an extended period of time in another highly competitive individual sport.
Not that it matters much anyway.
