After Life

Just finished second episode seems canny like, gonna cook my bait and will watch another one or two.

Oush spoiler but tbh I could see that happening from the start he’s gonna end up going with that lass who helps his dad.

Just finished second episode but imagine she will be in it a lot as she’s in a lot of things that he does.

Ah, sorry about that:(

Whatever your thoughts on Ricky Gervais and I get people dislike him, the fella is a genius. The way he can combine comedy with a complete opposite emotion is very clever. The Office, Extras, Derek all had an uncomfortable edge to its comedy, often cringeworthy, embarrassment and lots of mental heath references....After Life manages to take absolute personal tragedy, death, cancer, addiction, prostitution and suicide and create a light hearted often hilarious as well as tearful portrayal of someone dealing with grief. Hats off as this could have been disastrous.

I would also recommend Fleabag. Similar comedy/tragedy scenario with a Peep Show style.

He’s good like Derek was brilliant at that, just about to start episode 3 of After Life.

Good so far like, enjoying it.

Ended up binge watching it all ha, really good.

Really enjoyed it.

Only slight criticism is that a few of the themes and some of the humour seemed to have been recycled from his stand up shows / twitter rants.

Would have it down as number 3 behind The Office and Extras.
Agree. I knew how 2/3 scenes would go because he’s recycled the same thing 3/4 times. I’m sure some dialogue was used from his podcast with Karl as well.

He's nee genius like. The writing is obvious, facile and incredibly crass at times. The characters are all paper thin and just there for him to bounce off. His brother in law was one off the shittest characters I've ever seen in a TV show and the fat lad was embarrassing too. The gentle tone and the rural setting feel like they've been lifted straight off Detectorists but without any of the charm or subtlety. Baffled why you're all getting your knickers wet about this like.

Fleabag's brilliant. That's proper writing with fully developed characters and subtle as fuck scenes that fuck with your head - everything Gervais seemingly hasn't been able to do since The Office.

Pretty apt username…

I totally get where Ricky was coming from with his character. Being widowed definitely brings resentfulness and a rage against life together with a deep, aching sense of loss that makes you wonder why you bother.

The scene with the two men trying to mug him was something I actually experienced too. Although my response wasn't physical, I had an identical attitude and had a similar outcome (I lived in a crime hotspot at the time so it wasn't exactly a shock to me when it happened). I felt at that moment that I really had nothing to lose had no fear of dying and articulated that they might beat me to a pulp for all I cared but they would get hurt too.

I haven't seen all of it but I'm interested to see where his character goes with this.

I thought the first episode wasn't funny and had loads of things that jarred.

His house was too nice for a jobbing journalist, the offices of the free paper were over staffed, the kitchen scenes were badly set, what sort of moron buys one tin of dog food, the muggers were terrible actors and would have scared no one. The humour relied on fat jokes, a fart joke and the word cunt. Apparently it gets better and Gervais has done mostly great stuff so I am sticking with it.

I forgot about the David Brent film. That was a disaster.

Maybe he's independently wealthy, maybe his wife was CEO of a fortune 500 company, maybe they had won the lottery.......

Its a TV show, sit back and enjoy.
