Facts about Sunderland

Edison had the best filament. They put them together and formed a company together.
Edison arrived at the solution late, Swan wasn't bothered about making money and selling his invention outside of Britain. Edison took the rights in USA under EdiSwan. And hence forth Americans pretended that Edison invented the light bulb.

Do you mean that big round thing at asda grangetown that ive seen on google maps? Always wondered what that was. And where was Edward Thompson's again? In town somewhere?
Paper mill was towards Hendon Beach near Grangetown. There was also a factory where The Echo Building flats are now.

A lot of the sand at Roker actually came from the Egyptian desert, used as ballast in trading ships coming back from the Middle East.

Anyone interested in this kind of stuff needs to get off the SMB now and get on amazon to order ‘Alice In sunderland’ which is packed full of facts, trivia and various other titbits of local knowledge. A great read.

A tunnel you say? Can you still get into it?

I believe it’s sealed now. There was a large well near the reservoir which has since been capped. I’m unsure about the paper mill end.

Yes, the big round thing as a concrete reservoir. Defunct now.

Like I said Edison improved the filament and they formed a company (Edi)(Swan) together ;)

LS Lowry used to visit Sunderland for holidays.

Terry Deary the author of ‘Horrible histories’ is from Sunderland.
Also Lewis Carroll spent his holidays in our wonderland. James Herriot as well but he was born here.
