Facts about Sunderland

The old wearmouth bridge was once the longest single span cast iron bridge in the world.

It was designed by Thomas Paine, the famous political activist who wrote Rights of Man.

The name Sunderland derives from Sundorelande, which literally means separate land, as it's split by the River Wear.

Or something like that.

It comes from the monastery being granted the land south of the river mouth by the king of Northumbria, and they called it the "sunder-land", ie split from the monastic land on the north bank.
