I'm 32 and have only been working for 8 years.

Yes, actually.

2 bedroom flat.
I’m lucky(ish) mate, no qualifications but wanted to join the army, did that at 16, had 2 kids by 18! Knuckled down, did 24 year and left in 2013, paid off the mortgage, built an extension and semi retired.

Apologies if that sounds like I’m bigging myself up, I’m not, I’m just using it as a perspective as I know our lives are totally different.

Tis mind but think about it,what lender would give you 20x your salary?
Fuck knows mate!

From what I can gather through films, the baby boomers were out every weekend with their sharp tailoring and pills and shiny scooters. So what gives eh?

Aye, the same ones who got student grants then told that followed them that they would have to pay back loans and tuition fees. :D

Fair enough to you. I doff my cap in your general direction.

That you can but what's the alternative these days? 16-17k in a call centre or nissan

You do what you need to do. It depends on your goals. If you desperately want a house, get a job abroad, or look for jobs offshore, chase high paying contract work, work two jobs Save like fuck. Or you could just piss it up going out spending it on other stuff, gather "likes" and whinge about not being able to afford to live. Your choice.

He's basically saying they got paid fuck all but things cost fuck all. Apparently our generation drink nowt but champers and 'designer gin'.

Knacker.

The point I was making is that we got paid the going rate, but we made do with owld second hand stuff we could afford, saved up for better stuff,
and we drank cheap beer in the club. Just take a look at Durham's Ebony Champagne Bar to see proof of the latter, there's queues of youngin's out the door. I also have a 19 year old grandaughter (Definitely no), and her, her boyfriend and her mates drink the designer stuff on every night out. Maybe you are in a social backwater where you are?

Because they don't start work until early to mid twenties in a lot of cases, whereas most in former generatiins, started work between 16 and 18 yrs old.

They closed them down as you will doubtless remember.

Yes, they did close the pits down, but what's that got to do with the discussion.? You said that you wouldn't turn up to work looking like a tramp, and that we had no self respect. We all looked like tramps working at the pit, but we certainly had self respect.

No mate, thick as fuck but in a much better position than arseholes like you.

Are you? How is that?

Shouldn’t have gone down there with knackered shoes imo. Safety hazard.

By extension, suits had naff all to do with my point but you brought them up. Why was that?

They want to live the life of Riley, having your own place requires paying bills and being responsible.
I left home 22 years ago, never went back, stood on my own two feet and have kept a roof over my bairns head.

I didn't have knackered shoes another poster said that if you remember, but it seems you are getting confused.

You said you wouldn't go to work looking like a tramp, so presumably you look smart. I look smart in a suit but I wouldn't wear one down the pit.

BTW you still haven't explained what the pits closing down has to do with the discussion

I haven’t said you did at any point.

You really are confused, or are you just having an early start on the lash?

You still haven't answered the question what the pits closing down has got to do with the discussion

I haven’t said anything about your shoes specifically. You appear to be imagining it.

The part about the pits was my incorrect assumption you were suggesting kids of today should be doing similar. Apologies.

@Zig81
You ok hun?

Is your situation you’ve paid your mortgage off in your 40s or something and that’s why it’s better than mine?

Congrats if so mate, made up for you.
