I used to have a country gentry type flat cap back in my younger days.
They were also known as cheese cutters for the benefit of the uninitiated .
Most of those in Peaky are of the more baggy duckbill variety.

My dad would not go out without his cap on. He had one for work in the shipyard and a variety of good ones for when he went out dressed. As a kid I can remember various trips to Newcastle to the cap shops there when a new one was required. When he died his best one was put, folded in the coffin with him.

I’ve seen tatty old workers type flat caps used for a thousand and one purposes other than keeping the heed warm, where handling something with a bare hand was not appropriate .
