Andy Murray

Loved watching him as he always had ups and downs and struggled to victory. Played a lot of epic matches.

He'll be a huge miss. I must add he should have won more. Never won Australia despite being in 5 finals is very disappointing.

Exactly. Hamilton and Chris Froome are arguably more dominant in their respective sports.

Fair dos, each to their own. Personally I think Hamilton is brilliant, obviously, and gets far too much grief off people. I'd still prefer Murray to him.

As for Froome, drug accusations harm his legacy (same with Mo Farah), as do the fact that he is around in an era where British Cycling is dominant - Murray carries British tennis, or generally has done, for 10+ years.

As I say though, each to their own.

4 finals to Djokovic and 1 to Federer.

His overall record to the big 3 in Grand Slams was 20-5. Part of the problem.

He's not even the greatest Scottish sportsman ever.:lol::lol:

Dalglish, Jackie Stewart, Eric Liddell, Jock Stein, Alex Ferguson, ......

The latter two were moderate when it came to performance on the pitch but great managers. Eric Liddell won a gold and bronze in an Olympics, as a sprinter, that puts him behind Alan Wells, in terms of Scottish Olympians and I doubt anyone would say Wells is the greatest Scottish sportsman ever.

Dalglish is clearly the greatest Scottish footballer ever but it's difficult to compare team sports to individual.

Stewart - you could argue that Jim Clark had more talent.

Not saying it was easy but at times he was better than both of them. There was also times he got knocked out of the Australian when an average player won the final (non of the big 4).

What he has achieved in arguably the greatest era of tennis is nothing short of phenomenal. We even won a Davis cup FFS. Greatest British tennis player ever.

I don't get the hate. Top bloke, survived Dunblane, does loads for charity's and doesn't take himself seriously.

Hopefully he can get through it to a Wimbledon farewell.

This is what I don’t understand about people who don’t like him. He’s criticised for being boring yet every interview I’ve seen with him he always comes across as funny and interesting, albeit dry.

Real shame he’s forced into making the choice, but a phenomenal sportsman.

Not sure you can have a "greatest sportsperson ever" but Andy Murry is and has been a brilliant tennis player and has absolutely nothing left to prove - 3 Grand Slams and 2 Olympic Golds. Absolute legend of the sport and it's really sad to see him bow out like this

The problem is, he existed in an era where youhad 3 other exceptional players. You could argue that this is the best ever era of tennis given the quality of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

he gets lambasted for having a dull voice, which he knows himself and is quick enough to take the piss out of

Exactly. And then there’s also the flip side of it which is that even if he didn’t take the piss out of it, it’s entirely unimportant and irrelevant to his achievements, which are incredible.

I think a lot of people read a story about him a number of years ago and are too lazy to review their opinion tbh.

massive shame. The injury really stopped him going on and winning so much more. one of the most talented sportsmen this country as ever produced. People don't realise how good he is because he's been in the same era as Federer, Nadal and Djokovich.

It's typical of this country that a huge number of people don't like winners - maybe it is jealousy but for years as a nation we appear to cheer the "plucky losers" and dislike the professional winners

Nick Faldo
Lewis Hamilton
Stephen Hendry
Andy Murray
Nigel Mansell
Seb Coe

all largely disliked

Jimmy White
Frank Bruno
Eddie Edwards

all British "heroes" for winning very little

Correct. If we're being honest, he was a level slightly below those 3 but above all the rest. In a different era, he would have won 10-15 grand slams

TBF most of them (Murray apart) are cunts so that doesnt really help their likeability! ;)

He won 45 ATP titles to Stan's 16. They only have the same number of Grand Slams (3). Andy Murray was a much better player than Stan Wawrinka - that is unquestionable.

Just inside the top 50 for total titles isnt he?

There's no doubt he's been an outstanding tennis player, but talk of him as the country's best ever sportsman is over-egged an awful lot by the fact we've been absolutely dreadful at tennis for most people's lifetimes.
