Veganuary

Generally people are eating less red meat because it's f***ing expensive, especially for what it is.

I don't miss it but do like a bit chicken and bacon now and again. Them Tuna steaks in cans are lush anarl.

My diet doesn't have much proper meat in it. I wouldn't give myself strict dietary requirements unless it was for medical reasons.

Just being as conscious as ever that I should reduce the amount of meat I’m eating.

So for me that’s making the meat I do use go further by using more beans and pulses in my cooking.

One thing I am doing this Jan is cutting out alcohol. Was having more days drinking than not in a given week up until December where I made a conscious decision to not drink except for a social occasion like a work Christmas do or the match.
All that is spot on. I've cut out all obvious processed sugar but not going to the far end of a fart.

I’ve been gradually moving towards veganism for months; I caved and bought some cheese for over the festive period but I’m hoping to go the whole hog (pun intended) soon.

There’s no need to take vitamin/mineral supplements on a vegan diet if you make the right choices. The trouble is people who don’t know anything about nutrition (like me!) try to switch without figuring out what they’ll (healthily) eat afterwards.

Nice to see people making small and big changes. 2018 has definatley been the year of the vegan.

Some of the bait available in Durham and Newcastle is top notch now, but I have had some shite meals too, trial and error. I don't get to sunderland for food to much but I know that love lilly on roker sea front does a quality vegan breaky.

Into my third year now of plant based eating, theres a load of new stuff being pushed for veganary nearly all of it being absolute crap for you, Greggs sasuage roll and the new Iceland no cheese Pizzas being examples, theres a Vegan bacon sainsburys are launching as well but suspect it will be crap the other bacon alternatives all are so far. Being Vegan deosnt always = being healthy. The beyond burger in Tesco is really good though probably the closest thing to meat have had, but are high in salt, impossible burger is meant to be hitting the UK this year.

If wanting to see more about health reasons for plant based it then How not to die book and the linked NutritionFacts.org | The Latest in Nutrition Related Research are good places to start.

Clean meat wil more be the revolution anyway which wont be vegan based but will be the next big thing over next five years or so, the big american food companies are starting to back it and for India and China is the only real way forward for the increasing meat demands they have. Welcome - Clean Meat

Have you tried the no bull burger from Iceland?

Yes they are decent as well, the vivera ones in sainsburys fridge section are good as well taste exactly like corned beef, the big frys sausauge thing that is in the freezer section in Holland and Barret very good as well.

I also really like the chunk, chicken type pieces that are in freezer in tesco only have a couple ingredients and are soy based so seem on the face of it reasonably healthy. n the main I end up eating a lot of tofu and beans, lentil curries etc anyway.

I think it's hilarious when people get offended that you eat a substitute or that you call a quorn sausage a sausage..

We are big curry eaters. Quality

Theres Bojangles on Sea road that are predominatley plant based, they tried to go 100% but lost trade so have some meat items back on the breakfast menu, Good Apple Cafe on Derwant street is nice as well although can be ard to get a seat.

Super natural in Newcastle probably my fave goto place if meeting the daughter for food from Uni.

On the other side I find it ridiculous that some vegans complain as well about some of the meat substitues being too meaty, but a lot of that I think is trying to be next level vegans look at me I cant even eat these things without gagging, when other things like mushrooms have that sort of texture anyway.

No she vege as is Stepdaughter, our lass has kind of gone vege as well although she eats fish every now and then. Newcastle has a lot of choice with more opening all the time, the people that do the Quayside market are meant to be opening a new Cafe this month and their food is decent. The Punk Pizza place is really good up there as well they do a really good "meat free" kebab with Vege haggis and stuff on.

The trick for me is more veg, more plant food, less meat and fish and better quality. Almond milk on cereal, goats milk in drinks. (Once you look into it the lot of an animal in the dairy industry is arguably no better than in the meat industry, but goats seem to have a better time of it and their dairy is easier to digest). I suspect people will gradually move towards a lower meat diet, hopefully without us being labelled flexitarians.

Veganism is not for me, yet, but I admire those that are giving it a go. Why people feel threatened by it reveals ignorance and an easy target.
