› UK Plastic bag charge to be doubled to 10p in all shops across England

It won't, needs to be 50p or a pound imo...as I rarely remember or know in advance that I'm off to the shops. Hope delivery each week costs 40p and.must get 20 bags minimum. Total waste, but can't be bothered to carry loose items across my living room etc. Wish they would use re-usaboe bags that we paid a deposit for or something....total pain.
Why not paper bags, or returnable boxes?

McDonalds charge you for a bag to put your food in.

Made the mistake of not ordering a bag the other week and got my food on a tray even though it was takeaway. Bizarre.

Plus paper bags were supposed to be exempt. I assume McDonalds are profiteering from it.

Are the ones in supermarkets (Sainsbury’s orange ones which are the size of a postage stamp but thicker for example) not classed as single use?
Basically what you’re saying about McDonalds here is that you got mugged right off by some spotty late teen?

Got it on a tray as you didn’t order a paper bag :lol::lol:

She offered me one and I declined out of principle. Proper petty...

Just clicked actually. I was still in Scotland at the time of purchase.

Different rule.

Silly now this how shops can profit from this. Thought it was brought in for the environment. Are retailers putting the money back into solving plastic polution? Doubt it
I've been saying it for years. Punishing people isn't working and it never will. Reward them instead and it will change people attitude.
I lived in Alberta and they charged for drinks cartons (5c for under a litre and 25c for over). When you return them you get your money back. I would save all mine up for a few months and buy myself a case of beer as a reward.
In Manitoba they don't offer the return but still charge you the recycle fee. The streets are littered with cans and bottles. Between both provinces it shows the effect a reward system (even if you pay into it yourself like Alberta) has and that it really works.

Do people not think that it's wrong when they're doing this?

No respect for themselves, the environment, or the wildlife...
Some fat bloke at the match yesterday had a go at me as I dared to challenge his dropping litter.

Waited inside the turnstiles for about ten mins the loser.

So many just see nothing wrong with littering, it's a scourge on society.

Having respect for your own, and other peoples surroundings should be second nature, taught and encouraged in the home and in schools.

The Mcdonalds bag charge isn't added of you have part packaged food in your bag like fries or a hash brown.

Same as you aren't charged for a bag in a supermarket if you're only packaging raw meats and fish

Although the law specifically states that paper bags are exempt from charges so God knows why Mcdonalds have a levy

I do a fair bit of walking and judging by the state of the hedgerows and footpaths, I'm afraid to say that a significant percentage of the population seemingly couldn't give a flying fuck about littering or the environment generally.

The main refuse is usually fast good cartons and drinks bottles.

And it's not just the 'scruffy' north east.
Last year I walked up to Easedale tarn from Grasmere. It's stunningly beautiful.
There were water bottles and energy drink containers just scattered about. What is wrong with these people?

We need a lead from government to encourage a fundamental change in the public's attitude to littering, better environmental education for both kids and adults plus a significant tax on fast food companies and drinks manufacturers to concentrate their and their customers' minds.

We humans continue to shit in our own nest and eventually we'll all pay the price.

I'm not bothered how they do it, just needs to work.....terrible the way they pack currently.
Well surely it's better than plastic bags?

Wont stop stupid f***ing wildlife scoffing them
Now i know you're taking the piss..

We used to do that with glass bottles. Good idea
