Tyne Tunnel scrapping payment booths????

Before anyone starts, I don't believe this but here goes. Our lass was told by one of our neighbours that the Tyne Tunnel are going to scrap payment booths and the only way you will be able to go through is by pre-booking on the internet or getting a season ticket. This idea seems ridiculous for a number of reasons but I just wanted to check with the collective brain of the SMB to make sure I am not going insane!

Anyone heard anything??

Dunno.butnthwy should make it work like dart charge

Think they want to use number plate recognition with open barriers. Presume you then go online later and pay your bill, assuming you remember...

ANPR Went live this week. The barriers remain, for now, but will go in due course. I don't know if they will keep one lane for cash people but for regular users it's good news.
Definitely.....or it will be IF they get rid of the barriers. Frustrating that they've only gone at this half cocked. Removing the barriers would make a massive difference, especially once Silverlink is finished

So presumably that disbars somebody who does not have a smartphone or Internet access from using the tunnel?
Nope

Nope
I'd put money on the barriers being gone before silver link is finished. It'll be a straight thoroughfare up and down.

Until you hit testos that is, and silver link MK2 begins.

24 hours to pay AFTER you've gone over isn't it?
24 hrs after the midnight following going over. Iirc
Open a account and they take it out automatically. BUT they keep a tenner in at all times......not daft the frenchies. UK govt could’ve done it but obviously that’d be for the good of the country and those Swiss Bank accts won’t fill themselves.

Dart Charge and the London Congestion charge have worked pretty much perfectly on this system for years, with ANPR and direct debiting. Regular users open an account (and get a discount iirc). Occasional users pay on the net within 24 hours by card. If you register your card with them it only takes seconds. If you're a paranoid old git like me who doesn't volunarily give up card details, it takes a minute longer.
Either way, you rarely get queues at Dartford anymore. Also, the first time you forget, they let you off with a warning;).

This. If you forget to pay you'll be issued with a fine.
Exacty my concern. I'm not a regular tunnel user. Pretty much only for match days.
I fear that after a mid week game, i get home about 11 gan to bed, get up and go to work., then by the time I'm back home again its suddenly 24 hours later or more.

And no i dont have the internet on my phone, so thats no use....
