Hope you enjoy the Southend game and make some new friends. The last time Sunderland played Southend the lads I go to the match with met up with some Irish lads who had started watching Sunderland during the Quinn / Keane era. We are all still friends and they still regularly come to games and have stuck with it through the grimmest of times. So beware, it's catching!

You may be interested in the historical links between Sunderland and Spain in the 1930s.

In May 1934, Sunderland were invited to Spain by the Spanish FA to play three games against the Spanish national squad in preparation for the 1934 World Cup. The first two games were draws, then Sunderland won the last game 3-1.

The Spanish press were very complimentary about the Sunderland team, in fact they wished that Sunderland could be sent to Italy to represent Spain as they were so superior to their own side. The press also commented that the World Cup itself was a bit of a sham as the real masters of the game (England) would not be there. I have some Spanish and Catalan newspaper reports of these games if you're interested, just send me a DM. I've also got some crummy Google translations of them, but no doubt you won't need those...

As it happens, the Spanish press were a bit harsh on their own team, as they reached the Quarter Finals, going out to the eventual winners Italy 1-0 in a replay after a 1-1 draw. Most of the players that played against Sunderland played in the World Cup, so it is fair to say that Sunderland could have made a decent attempt at that World Cup. England and Scotland would almost certainly have made the later stages.

Sunderland returned to Spain in 1935, beating a Catalan XI (mostly Barcelona players) 7-1, and a Madrid XI (a mix of Real and Atletico players) 2-1.

Pity there wasn't a Champions League in those days!

It was indeed mate. I dunno if it was our siege mentality that had built up for years with our flirtations with relegation, the gus bus journey, the long time since last visit to Wembley or all of the above. But that night to me will be remembered forever.

If only Borini slotted that chance to make it 2-0 instead of letting company back to make last ditch challenge.

I had Borini 1-0 at a massive price, think it was 125/1
I was in dreamland at half time

Hello there,

(apologies in advance if this is not the right place for this issue, and please forward me to the thread/area where I could write about this)

my name is Luis and I am a Spaniard living in London. While I have a day job in software dev, I write articles as a side project.

I've contacted the well-known Spanish printed magazine 'Panenka', that focuses on the emotional side of football, to write an article about SAFC. I also plan to release it online in English.
I have been interested in the club for years, and I will try to make justice to the impressive supporters community that doesn't fail, weekend after weekend, to support the team with a really high average attendance in the Stadium of Light, even in the hardest moments.

I'll spend a weekend in the city, attend a match (the Blackpool one is a little tight, probably the one with Southend, to give myself time to prepare the article) and see by myself what's going on in there.

So far I have arranged an interview with Rob Mason, probably you all know him, to get insights about the history of the club and a better understanding about how come SAFC has such a strong football love behind.

If you feel like helping me out with telling me any fan I should get in touch with, any recommendations to experience properly being a Mackem for a day, or just want to grab a beer during my visit, please do reach me out.

Many thanks!
Luis, You should try and speak with Bally . He will show you what it means to be a Sunderland Supporter.

Sevilla FC. Actually, there are important links between the two clubs:

Yes! Ubik is that masterpiece by Philip K. Dick, one of many :)

I've sent you a message about Spanish football, enjoy the game tomorrow :)

They're no Depor!

Enjoy yourself tomorrow

What stand are you seated in tomorrow?
West Stand Tier 1

Did you see Maradona play? How was it?

Yes, but sadly the year he played for Sevilla he was already "cracking", if you know what I mean. He would spend more time "injured" than playing on the field. His transfer was 6 million euros in 1992, a record fee for the time.

Any idea about how to get in touch with him? I saw he is very involved with SAFC events but didn't find any contact details.

It's going to be cold!
He only lives in London marra. I don't think it's going to be much warmer there.

The temperatures due to plummet here today to 20°c if that makes people feel better . I would rather be at the match though.
