Hiking Boots

Quite happy to spend a reasonable amount. Not especially sure what 'high end' costs, but happy to spend circa £100

Thanks for the tip, but I'm actually based abroad. There are some hiking shops I can do that with but I wouldn't especially know what I'm askign for and i don't want to be taken for a ride of things I don't need etc
Waterproof, good sole, nice fit and lightweight is what you need. They haven't got to be "label" name.
Having said that these look like a bargain.

A good outdoor shop should be able to find you the right pair depending on your needs. When I did the Yorkshire Three Peaks a few years back, the bloke in Tiso in Newcastle spent the best part of an hour asking questions and getting me to try stuff on and simulate walking up and down hills etc. I got a pair of Brashers in the end and they've done the job. Think they were about £100 but a wise investment. He steered me away from more expensive ones.
The right socks are also worth investing in.

Brasher were that good they were taken over by Berghaus. Their Fellmaster range are the same spec and superb value for money. Loved my Salomon Gore Tex as well

QUOTE from earlier on:
I have Berghaus Ridgemaster gortex lined. My second pair. Comfortable and not too heavy.

Yes indeed.

That actually is the store I planned to go to, also there is one nearby called Alewalds which I will check out.

I actually tried on some North Face walking shoes rather than Boots at lunchtime which were on sale in a local sports shop. They looked very smart and durable but the grip on the bottom didn't appear especially durable.
If you're actually going to be hiking go for boots, you need ankle support.

I've got a pair of Scarpa Trex GTX's - Outstanding boots, as comfortable as wearing slippers. Think I spent about £120 - £150 on them but they've been worth every penny so far. I've just kept them in good nick with a tube of HS12 cream and they're like new despite being through many a peat bog, my feet haven't been wet once.

decide if you need a leather 4 season boot or if you can get away with a lighter 3 season boot

I have Salomon quest 4d GTX

a 3 season gore tex boot

supremely comfortable, no need for multiple pairs of socks or owt daft like that and a good high ankle

well worth the money, when these ones are finished I will buy the exact same pair again

I have those and find them a bit slippy on wet rocks, I just bought them a couple of months ago and have had them out on a few fell walks and found them to be a canny lethal in the wet on rocks, very slightly losing traction sometimes

Otherwise decent boots though, they look good and are very comfortable

Try the Altberg factory on Richmond Ind. Estate. They measure your feet and recommend the type of boots you need.
It's very popular with squaddies from Catterick Garrison. Had a pair from there for 8 years now and still going strong

Are you near town? If you are pop into Reynolds on Derwent Street, if you're nearer Newcastle pop into either LD or Cotswolds to get proper fitting and advice, it'll save you a lot of pain and blisters in the long run (walk)
Reynolds still there ? Pleased to hear that . I wonder if it is actually the Renolds family that run it . Got both me lasses tackled up in there. Happy times .

My current byuts are Berghaus they started falling apart the first time I used them . I had Scarpa before them and they were crap as well . I am told that Altberg and Miendle are the best that regular blerks can afford .
