Obesity discrimination

Used to work in a small team that was split between several buildings on the same site. We often had to carry boxes of equipment between the buildings depending on where we were working. One person was morbidly obese and refused to carry anything as they claimed carrying stuff made their chest feel tight due to their size. That got people's backs up as they felt that person was just being lazy. One of the team fell pregnant but was able to carry stuff right up until she left for maternity leave. People were happy to carry the load for her out of courtesy, even though she didn't need help. Just thought it was interesting how the two people were treated differently.

Nothing to do with the unnatural amount of weight already compressing their chest of course.

Lots of people are fat cos they are lazy (yes i know some its medical related). You arent going to employ someone who is lazy. How do you know if its laziness or medical? So you just dont take the chance.

If you want a job that will take a long time done quickly hire a lazy person.

Might be fat because they work too hard to have time for a healthy diet and exercise.

Fat celebrities who "own their size" and take their kit off are celebrated.
It's a health risk, and legitimizing it and making it acceptable might let the obese ones feel accepted, but you wouldn't celebrate a heroin addiction or somebody's alcoholism.
It's terribly bad for the own persons health with increased risk of cancers, heart disease, diabetes etc and obesity is a huge drain on NHS resources.

They shouldn't be discriminated against or abused or shamed or bullied for it, but this bad lifestyle choice should not be tolerated or celebrated in the way it is.

If there's an actor or a model who are in perfect shape, then celebrate them because that takes effort and dedication. It's extremely hard to look like that compared to looking obese. Don't havea go at somebody who looks after themselves just for making slobs feel bad.
Sitting still for 23 hours a day and consuming 30 litres of pop a week and eating from the take away takes no dedication, no effort and the results happen very quickly.

Maybe Morbid Obesity should be classified as a mental health problem similar to what bulimia is, then when you are being singled out it should be classed as victimisation. Much more needs to be done to reverse this obesity epidemic before its too late.

I've seen a programme about one of these 50st people and there was something wrong in his brain that no matter what or how much he ate he constantly felt hungry. Even if he just had 3 12 inch pizzas his brain was telling him he needed more food. He was aware of it as well, but felt constantly hungry. Must be a total nightmare that like

Article about it on BBC Breakfast calling for it to be outlawed.
Do you think it exists?
Do you think it is ever justified?
If it was subject to the same laws as race, sex and age, would it be sending the wrong message?

I remember someone who was morbidly obese who was made to sit on a different bank of desks to her team as she had body odour issues. This was obviously bad management as they weren't tackling the issue but I wonder if it would be more tricky to have that conversation if there were discrimination laws.

If someone can't look after themselves properly why should you want them looking after elements of your company?

Loads of people say they haven't enough time to prepare and cook a healthy meal when they get home from work etc.

It's just lack of knowledge and motivation.
It comes down to this for me. But we also live in an age when more gyms, healthy food stuffs and education is available than ever in human history.

To look after your weight is not difficult, people always underestimate how much they eat and how much excercise they need.

This is true. Doesn't even need to be majorly healthy either, which I think is what puts a lot of people off.
Just eat less, move more. Kebabs 3 times a week and full fat coke are going to be detrimental.
Just Eat and ridiculous meal deals from takeaways make it easy for people to fall into a trap. Take aways should be a treat, not the norm

It's a lot quicker to buy unhealthy convenience food than it is to make a healthy meal.

Fat people in being lazy shock.

The subconscious is quite sneaky. Put stuff in front of you and you will be eating it before you realise. It likes high calorific salty, fatty, sweet stuff. That is put in front of you wherever you go. It likes the path of least resistance and will eat a ready meal and sit on the phone rather than prepare a decent healthy meal.

Ironically, we are happier after we have exercised and eat healthy stuff. So we need our conscious mind to override the subconscious. I do this by only taking decent food into the house. No biscuits/crisps/pop. I haven't got the willpower not to snack. I forced myself to do more exercise as I got older and gave up one car between me and the missus and started walking and cycling on certain journeys

I can see how people get fat and lazy, we are programmed to do it. It just isn't a recipe for a happy healthy existence.
