Scandi noir/drama recommendations/discussion

More redneck noir than scandi but the American series Sharp Objects on Sky is worth trying.

Good but not brilliant - the constant flash backs were confusing, well for me anyway.

Somehow the whole thing is less than the sum of its parts, but it does have its moments and Amy Adams in the complex and challenging lead role is excellent.
Is episode one a good guide to the rest of the series?

Purely because it’s got amy adams (wad) in it I watched the first episode. Odd is the best description, and it’s definitely a fit for “redneck Noir”

Also, the soundtrack has a lot of appeal & kinda makes it too...

I watched the series two episodes at a time so I'm not sure. Even though it was just a couple of weeks ago my memory is shit.

But if you find Amy Adams pleasant to watch then you should really continue - but there is a twist.

It's a strange series where some individual scenes are really memorable but I thought it meandered a bit at times.

Yes the soundtrack is interesting - the cheap car stereo sound quality is very effective.

As well as odd, stand by for quirky, sweaty, unsettling nausea.

i'm in!

I started this, then lost a lot of episodes when my tivo box had to be replaced, so never really caught up.
was it much kop from what little you saw?

from memory they made three series about a "family" who all seem to come home for some "event"? it appeared the same time as the likes of borgen but didnt seem to have much 'point' when compared to a politco drama or cop whodunit?

It was definitely lacking in something, I was a few episodes in and still waiting to 'love' it.

i'm persevering, nearly finished it... not sure i'm totally sold on it, but purely for amy adams i'm gonna see this through. its a bit of a rough diamond and definitely leans on the nordic noir genre. i do find that my mind wanders and i'm picking up my phone during the show. you probably nailed it best with - "Somehow the whole thing is less than the sum of its part"

its going further and further down my list of must see....

I'm not sure I would have persevered if I'd just watched one episode at a time - but I'm pleased I did.

It's not must see tv but it's one of the more interesting shows I've seen this year and Amy Adams is very good. The dress shop changing room scene is very powerful.

Having said that, it's streets ahead of the BBC's recent much vaunted but to me very generic crime dramas.

Anyone been watching Mystery Road? It's Aussie not Scandi but is in the BBC4 9pm Saturday slot and is of the genre. and very good.
can't say aussie stuff is something i'd go for at face value... 7.7 on imdb and the arkle seal of approval suggests it may be worth a gander. how far through the series is bbc4? only 6 episodes so could be kanny to watch.

gonna watch Ride Upon the Storm after Sharp Objects, might squeeze this in though.

I watched one, but found the characters a bit unappealing. Or am I being too judgemental? However, another Aussie drama on Netflix - The Code about a journalist and his hacker brother I really enjoyed.

4 episodes in so it ends this weekend.

I don't think it's necessarily about characters as much as it is about atmosphere. With the exception of the local police chief (played by Judy Davis), they all seem to be the silent, moody type I'd imagine to be standard in a small outback town.

For the netflix subscribers, i've been recommended a scandi noir offering which is available in the uk - "warrior" (think its been out in Denmark on their telly already). Its got a couple of usual suspects in it and stars Dar Salim as a war veteran infiltrating a Copenhagen biker gang... bit different to my normal jumper clad scandi type of shows but its meant to be half decent...

Will report back if its any good...

Has bbc4 had much worth checking out recently?

Don't think they've done much Scandinavian in a while until series 2 of Black Lake, which is on now. I gave up on the first series so didn't bother with this. Wouldn't mind finding out what's on after that.

Prior to that, they showed The Sinner, which was excellent but decidedly American.

Channel 4 have episode 1 of Elven (The River) on tomorrow. Part of their Walter Presents stuff so not sure whether it's first episode on TV, the rest on All4 as usual.

I watched The Sinner and although as you say it's very American, I thought it was quite edgy in places, particularly in the relationship between Cora and her sister and Jessica Biel was very watchable.

I missed the first series of Black Lake and gave up part way through the first episode of this latest offering. Just didn't float my boat.

Yeah, Jessica Biel was very good and Bill Pullman was his usual understated self. Series 2 was broadcast in the US last year so should make its way over here at some point. Different cast/characters barring Harry Ambrose.

Series two is on Netflix. I have to confess as much as I've always loved Bill Pullman it definitely lost its way a bit for me.
