Where are all the black English cricketers?

The decline of the West Indies over the past couple of decades probably hasn’t helped. The days of Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Joel Garner, Curtley Ambrose, Brian Lara as inspirational figures have gone. Black kids identify more with boxing, basketball & football (ours & NFL) stars these days.

I suspect that rugby may come above cricket as well...

It would appear Sussex: Mills, Jordan and Archer all playing for them tonight.

This will go well

The article has zero credibility if it’s referencing Alex Tudor straight up.

I’d say the bigger issue is the lack of Asian county cricketers

Id agree with that too.

I'd say this is it, there are less kids playing it even over there.

Immigration from the Caribbean must be down to a trickle now. Most of the blacks who immigrate here now are from West/North East Africa with nee cricketing heritage at all.

This kind of assumes the black and Asian populations have a similar geographical distribution as white british, but is that true? It seems to me black and Asian are often concentrated in inner city areas where access to cricket is not as easy, especially in London perhaps.

The other thing is class. Middle class English have greater access to cricket, via better (and private) schools. In the North East and Yorkshire (and other former mining areas) there's a strong tradition of village cricket.

Lots of Asian club cricket teams. I know of two in Portsmouth and it's hardly the most cosmopolitan of places. Don't they have an Asian league in Yorkshire?

I believe they do but also a huge number of non Asian clubs against which the lads will have to compete to get into the Yorks system.

I think modern and Rashid will start next test.

Shame jofra archer has a canny wait to qualify. Jordan's usually a pick in t20s as is tymal mills.

Must admit I'm struggling to think of any others apart from these lads

Just heard that jofra archer took a T20 hat trick tonight, Sussex beating Middlesex
