SMB Tennis thread

Long way back for Zverev now.
Aye, seems ages ago since he had 0-40 in that first game.

Anyone know when the RG qualifying draw is? I'm sure qualifying starts tomorrow so dunno why it's not out.

Can't find anything on that website, it's garbage.

Just seen this, so you're looking at 5pm UK time:

The draw for the men’s qualifying rounds will take place on Sunday 20th May, at 6pm in Roland-Garros stadium.

Good opportunity for Clarke who has got in (with room to spare) following numerous withdrawals.

Ta. Been looking all over for it but I'm either blind and very hungover or pretty much nowhere actually had the info!

All qualifying's being streamed this year as well apparently, good stuff.

Game on here. 0-4 second set. Thought he was done after that first set and the amount of matches he has had.

Aye, Eurosport 2 and Eurosport player covering them as well. 4 Brits in actions overall although if any of them make it they will have done very well. Maybe Taylor with a good draw, likewise Jay at a push.

Frustrating breaks in play due to the rain.

That's the worst thing about the French Open (well, maybe after the crowd and lack of hawk-eye). Just had a look at the 14 day Paris forecast and it looks like there will be plenty of thundery showers so there'll no doubt be many breaks in play. At least in all the other slams there will be something to watch at all times and you have at choice at the AO (and will do at the USO this year and Wimby from next year). I've sometimes taken a day off to watch a day of tennis (usually Wimbledon) but it's much more riskier at the French.

Draw is out:

Nadal to win FO and lose less than 70 games 13/8

Hmm, saw that at PP earlier but I think I'd want bigger odds or certainly more leeway with the games dropped. He'll likely win his earlier round games like 2, 3, 2 or even better, but we've seen him lose sets to FF and Zverev recently so I think that's a bit optimistic. I also see that he has slightly drifted and Zverev has come in slightly (as short as 6/1) following that match today.

These past 3 weeks have definitely made it much more interesting, he'll still likely win without dropping a set, but it does feel more like an event now. In the 3 weeks since his Barcelona win, Zverev has won 13 games and given him a very good run today and who knows what would have happened if the rain didn't come down. Thiem beat him in Madrid and Djokovic showed signs of recovery yesterday, you can pretty much forget the rest though.

Your boy Milos pulled out earlier, can't catch a break that lad.

Whilst I don't like to see anyone suffer from injury I'm pleased he's not going to be playing.

Who will win the women's event? Halep?

Like usual there's a ridiculous amount of contenders. I'd have Svitolina, Halep and Kvitova as the 3 leading favourites and could potentially add Sharapova in there as well as she is finding form and has that big match experience being a past winner. Even the likes of Bertens and Kasatkina could be considered as it is their best surface and are getting decent results. Unfortunately can't see Mugurruza doing well, but she has a habit of doing absolutely nothing for months and then randomly peaking at a big event. Then there's the defending champ Ostapenko as well who's had a solid start to 2018 .

Really looking forward to the women's event and eagerly anticipating the draw on Thursday evening as that might make things easier to predict, although there aren't as many 'dangerous floaters' this time around.

When are these qualifiers

Jay Clarke's just about to start if anyone's interested. Bookies priced him up at 13/8 when the odds came out last night, he's favourite now on the exchange and a couple other bookies before the match even starts.

Hopefully they lose a fair bit and I win a fair bit.

Just got home. Thought Clarke might have been the main match on our Eurosport coverage. I've got the Player so can watch but would have preferred commentary and be more freer to chat on here. Looks like he's made a decent start after being 2-0 down early on.

Katie Boulter and Gabriella Taylor are due to face each other in the 2nd round if they can get past their opener so both won't qualify, but it was very unlikely both would anyway, so this might help get one of them into the FQR.

Ramanathan has looked the better player from the parts I've seen this set. Serving to take it into a decider.

Good win there for Jay in the end. I think the final set scoreline flattered him a bit as there wouldn't be too many points in it, but the Indian player was 100 places above him and the highest ranked in the mini section. Tomic next which will be interesting.

Norrie will finally be in the top 100 in next weeks rankings after a Lyon 250 R1 win today, faces Marterer next who beat Monfils earlier.

Evans came through qualifying in the Loughborough challenger and James Ward won the battle of the wildcards, beating Glasspool.

Oh, and the WImbledon main draw entry lists are due soon.

Busy day!

On Nadal at 6/1 to win without dropping a set, was a lot more confident about it happening a few weeks ago though, he is possibly just playing within himself the last few weeks to save himself for the main one though.

It all depends on the weather. If it's hot and sunny then he will tear everyone to shreds. If it's cold and overcast, he might drop a set or two.
