Remission

Have you tried the paleo diet, it works for my daughter.

Not tried it but I had tests previously and I didn't react to gluten or dairy.

Great news. What are trigger foods?

Seafood and spinach are the bad ones. Things like fried/greasy food, pastry and alcohol are ok in small amounts but not large quantities.

Yes I'm still on that.

It's the Octasa I'm tapering first to see if I can manage without that, then I'm hopefully coming off the azathioprine in November. Be nice to have an immune system again :D

Great news for you, hope it keeps under control for a long time. I had a go on azathioprine, didn't agree with me at all and the consequences were pretty grim

Ah that’s great news , I’ve never bloody managed it in 20 years so you’re lucky ! Hope everything keeps working well

Same here , my pancreas packed in

Saw gastro and I'm in remission :D

I'm on two different drugs at the moment. I've got to start tapering off one over the next three months and then wait three months and see him again. If I'm still ok then, he'll start tapering me off the other one.

I'm not cured and the Crohn's could flare up again at any time, but if I take care of myself, he said I've got a good chance of being healthy for a while *fingers crossed*
Nice one becs , really pleased for you

There was a programme on radio 4 yesterday where a physician was talking about how he’s discovered that inflammation in the body is a trigger for depression.

He mentioned rheumatoid arthritis and Chrons as the two main aggravators.

Who knows what the future holds.

Strange how these things work. It was the only effective drug for me.

Ouch, nothing quite as bad , I managed a couple of days and gave up. Wanted me on methotrexate but decided to try lifestyle changes rather than being stuck on more medication. Changed my job to something less stressful and a better diet have worked wonders. One thing I've figured from immune disorders is how one condition varies so much from person to person

Yeah for some lucky ones just a change in diet is enough but tried all the biologicals and when the roids stopped giving any relief was end of the road for me hence the surgery choice - don’t appreciate ‘celebrities’ like Sam fairs pushing the message that diet cured her - there is no cure

Which way round is that?
So if you are depressed you get these illnesses or the other way round?

Totally understand, it's not Crohn's I suffer from but a friend of mine does, she was the first female in the UK to have a bowel transplant. Imo it would be more beneficial to have someone like her as a spokesperson for the illness than a "celebrity "

That is really interesting actually, I'll have to try and listen to that,

Other way round. Inflammation causes depression.

It’s well known people with rheumatoid arthritis get depressed for example. They originally just thought it was because of pain and illness etc. but now think it’s the physical inflammation.

It peaked my interest as my dad suffers from really bad depression and also has a host of physical problems and the doctors, like you and I assume he’s depressed because he’s ill and not because of the illness.

There is a definite correlation between depression and flare ups for me, like you said I just put it down to the pain and feeling shit .

I know the inflammation from the Crohn's appears in other body parts when it's flaring. It's common to get things like random joint pains or inflamed gums. It's odd how it affects your whole body and not just your guts.

Stress is a trigger. It kicked off like crazy when my Dad had his heart attack and stroke in India and we didn't know if he would ever get home.

When it flares, I struggle with day to day stuff and I'm on my own so there's nobody to pick up the slack. Everything builds up and that makes the bigger picture look worse, then it seems harder to deal with and so on. That's when I feel low and that I'm failing as I'm not coping. Maybe he's got something like that going on. Talk to him if you can, although I appreciate it's a hard one to approach. Hope he gets sorted xx
