Classic albums you just don't "get"

Anything by Yes.
I really like most prog sort of stuff because of my age, but never got the attraction. They always had decent album covers mind.

And anybody who doesn't like DSoTM should be taken out into the snow and left.

on a tangent to this thread I have just visited this page List of best-selling albums - Wikipedia and got two surprises.

Firstly I had believed that Dark Side Of The Moon was second only to Thriller in album sales, but this list shows that Back In Black is in second place above DSOTM.

Secondly I had assumed that Who's Next had sales similar to Led Zep IV but it's not even on the list!
Whilst it has it's moments, notably it's opening and closing tracks, Who's Next is not a good enough record to be considered a 'classic' in my opinion.

Big fan of Van Morrison, but really can't get on with Astral Weeks at all
Don't think I've actually heard all of it. There's a vid on YouTube of the Brooklyn Organ Synth Orchestra doing a groovy version of some of it.

Another vote for Dark Side of the Moon from me, which unlike another poster even acid couldn't improve.

Just checked out the Brooklyn Organ Synth Orchestra vid - excellent!

According to Wikipedia it is considered by many people to be the best rock album ever made. It was, along with Zep IV, a major part of the soundtrack to my early youth.

The LSD probably helped me to "get" dark side of the moon to be fair.
I don't really understand what's to get to be honest? Yeah there's some quirky moments with the voiceovers, On The Run and the alarms gannin' off, but aside from that it's just a collection of songs really with a bit of segueing here and there. I can understand Great Gig In The Sky not being everyone's cuppa tea but it's not as if it's hard to figure out as musically it's a lovely piece. Breathe, Time, Money, Us And Them, Brain Damage, Eclipse - they're pretty standard as songs go to be honest. I just think it's a great album put together amazingly well.

I could probably find you at least twenty other Wikipedia entries saying the same thing. I think it's overrated because three of the Who's very best songs just so happen to be on there.

It's very flat in the middle.

I disagree that it is flat in the middle. It is a relative thing. Perhaps the middle isn't quite as powerful as the bookend tracks but it isn't flat. Which is the third song you mentioned? Presumably Baba O'Reilly and WGFA are the two others? I'd wager it's Bargain.

"Get" and "like" probably could be separated, talking about Dark Side Of The Moon.

It isn't hard to get, themes; but you don't have to like it. It's written absolutely perfect, though.

ive also tried and tried with Forever Changes by love but cant get into it.

I never thought the Who were an albums band. Just great songs throughout their catalogue.

Saying that Quadrophenia is flawless but ill class that as a soundtrack

Behind Blue Eyes obviously.

I'm not talking about how 'poweruful' they are. The songs just aren't very strong, so they fall a bit flat compared to those three songs. After Baba it's all just a bit     until you hear Blue Eyes and think "ah, now this is a good song at last." The rest is very forgettable. It's probably a consequence of the album ultimately being a failed project of Townsends. He was trying to get from one point to the other and came up with some very middling arrangements, and that's what you end up with for the majority of Who's Next. A cobbled together record bookended with moments of excellence. At the end of the day The Who always did songs better than they did LPs.

Aye.

Quadrophenia was a 'concept' album before it was a film. The soundtrack to the film is a different record.
