Wisden cricketers of the year

And still no fucker watches it. That fans against Bosnia other day might as well have been played on Marley Pots playing fields!
I’m not pushing for county championship cricket to be on tv but I’d certainly like to more test coverage on terrestrial.
Women’s sport in comparison to men’s in pretty much every discipline is piss poor and tries to ride on the coat tails of the men’s game with the help of the PC brigade and box tickers. This is just the reality I’m afraid.
It’s not. It’s cause and effect. People don’t watch it because they haven’t been brought up to.

Unless you promote it, it will never thrive

They don’t watch it because it’s a poor substitute for the men’s game. What female sport in its own right really thrives?

The three played in front of a bigger crowd than Porter this season.

And female sport doesn’t thrive because it hasn’t had the backing. It can happen. The women’s football team played to a very large crowd at Wembley

As a one off game. I dare say a woman’s World Cup football final at Wembley would get a big crowd as well but in the main there is next to no interest due to it being a pretty poor spectacle in terms of standards. It’s just life I’m afraid that women are athletically inferior to men and that will never change regardless of how much it gets pushed.

There is little interest in county cricket. Porter played in front of two men and a dog all season

Not in 20/20 he didn’t and if he gets England honours he won’t. Unless the women get to a cup final or play prior to a men’s game they’ll continue to play in front of crowds club cricket would blush at.

Porter has been exceptional the times I've seen him. Has that Philander-like ability to wobble the ball around. I'd be surprised if he didn't make his test debut this summer.

It’s not a quota. But you know that

Have you maybe considered that audiences are not high because coverage is crap?

After all, we bemoan the state of men’s cricket and partially blame the lack of coverage on free to air tv

It’s almost as if there is a correlation.

Shai Hope. Yes

Men's cricket would be more popular if it was on FTA TV yes. There is a direct correlation because more exposure would mean more participation and more people wanting to experience watching it live.

Regarding women's cricket, it may indeed get more interest if it got more exposure, but then when you put it up against men's cricket you see that it is an absolutely horrific product. It could be argued that more exposure for it - like women's football - would actually not be a good thing for the sport long term. More and more people would see how horrific it is. To be honest, it won't be long before transgender Cricketers are cleaning up in the women's game, because like that weightlifter, the science backs the male characteristics.

Of course it isn’t as good. But it doesn’t mean people won’t go to it

County cricket isn’t as good as test matches, it’s just levels

cricket is far and away less popular than football so the argument is perfectly valid.

and I don't see how it is about the standard of the sport being played, otherwise why not just dump all county cricket coverage and replace it with the ipl [Christ what a thought]

why not replace all coverage of the championship and below with European football to be fair we already do, so I can't watch safc play football [blessing at the minute I know] but I can watch serie a or la liga.

ice hockey is class like

You've missed my point, I like watching sports played at levels below the top level aswell as elite level - what I'm saying is - if you're going to televise women's cricket however, why not televise second XI cricket first? Then club cricket? NEPL and then DCL? Because all of those levels of cricket are a better standard than England Women.

Football is an even bigger gap.

About 5 years ffs

Given the attendances at the average county championship game, there is an argument they should never be on tv....

5 years for what?

It's not just attendances with county cricket though is it? You have to also then consider how many people are listening to the commentary too. I'll bet more people will follow each County Championship game than a Women's Test Match.

5 years for real promotion of women’s football

And yes you’re right. But the county championship has 150 years if history. The women’s game is brand new pretty much, and needs promotion

This. You just have to look at that bollocks campaign to get Man Utd to create a women's team. Why should established football clubs pander to the women? If they want to create their own football team they're more than capable. They should do it off their own backs and make their own brand.

Why don't they? Cause they know how shit their product is and they know no fucker would care.

This is the reality of it. It’s not a case of sexism or being sexist it simply is what it is. Of course the odd game will attract a bit of novelty interest but in the main women’s sport is a bit of a white elephant that needs to jump on the men’s bandwagon to give it some slight relevance.

It is levels, but if Test Cricket is the pinnacle, which it is, and Domestic First Class cricket is the second tier, women's cricket probably isn't even in the top 10 levels of cricket.

100%

Women's Tennis and Women's Athletics are about the only ones in the mainstream that hold their own regarding relevance.

I recently watched GB Women's Ice Hockey team in their World Championship campaign (they got Silver) and it was a very poor standard. Almost pub standard in terms of skating ability, style of play and the in game knowledge of the players. The GB U18's Men's tournament was on at the same time and the difference in class was absolutely massive.

The main element was the speed - which is the same reason I can't watch women's cricket. It's on a level very similar to Under 15 cricket in my experience - but I reckon England U15's would beat England Women.

I hear what you're saying, but 150 years ago, you'd still have had bowlers reaching speeds of up towards 90mph. So throughout the lifetime of cricket, the quality has always been there.

A 'fast' bowler in women's cricket bowls about 65mph.

Yep, that’s genetics. That doesn’t mean it can’t be entertaining for people however

I’d even say athletics and tennis get by based on the fact they run simultaneously with the men’s game as well. Djokovic is apparently a bit disgruntled with the prize money on offer and there’s been rumours of the top male players breaking away. The women will sharp see the interest and money in their game decrease if that happens. Let’s be honest I’d say most blokes interest in women’s tennis is based more on how tidy they look rather than the game itself which is pretty ordinary in comparison to the male game.
