Wisden cricketers of the year

wad, wad and wad

some unsurprising but all together fairly sad belittlement of female crickets in this thread. the more people who love, play and follow cricker the better imo and I don't see what is wrong with picking some lasses after a successful summer for them as cricketers of the year. this isn't the 50s anymore
They won the World Cup!

f***ing hell, really scraping the PC barrel there like.

None of the fuckers would get a game for an NEPL side.

No excuse for not picking Rababda like.
It’s a joke really. If they wish to introduce a female wisden cricketer of year then that’s fine but to put them in the same category as the men, then pick them over the blokes is box ticking at its finest.

You must have horrific taste in women. As for the other feminazi shite - see below.

I have no issue whatsoever with women playing cricket - but to patronise them by elevating them to such lofty heights as being Wisden Cricketer of the Year is the same backward thinking that brought Uncontested Sports Days to the world. The standard is dogshit, frankly and the sooner everyone accepts that, the better.

Long term, it'll do the sport no favours to have people fawning over it with shit like "awwww look, they won the World Cup, how did the men get on in that?" and "well done to those brave lasses, getting hammered by Australia is no real shame is it.....?!"

No fucker goes to watch it week in week out, no fucker follows the scores and no fucker wants to listen to it. Yet the BBC still waste money covering it. Just like women's football. Money they'd be much better spending on proper cricket. There's lots of problems with cricket as we know regarding participation, I personally feel that FTA is the only thing that'll save it in the long term and when the Beeb is wasting money on pointless sports nobody is arsed in just to fill quotas and tick boxes - cricket will remain on its arse.

Couldn’t have put it better myself. Excellent post.

Then have a female category. Stoneman scored a 1000 runs again and Jamie porter a stack of wickets. There’s two off top of my head without even delving into the international summer.
Porter was selected this year

Stoneman - yeah maybe.

Have you heard of the concept of “chicken or egg?”

Was the West Indian lad? There’ll have been lads in div 2 who scored 1000 runs or took a stack of wickets far more deserving. It should be a different category if they wish to go down the road of awarding female cricketers.

What came first, Cricket or Quotas?
It’s not a quota. But you know that

Have you maybe considered that audiences are not high because coverage is crap?

After all, we bemoan the state of men’s cricket and partially blame the lack of coverage on free to air tv

It’s almost as if there is a correlation.

Shai Hope. Yes

out of interest what would your argument be to people who complain that only premiership football gets a half decent program on bbc, and even then only really the top 4 or so clubs, whilst the beeb waste money covering shite sports that nobody cares about such as cricket?

Cricket is the third most popular sport in this country, so your argument doesn't hold any water there.

As for football, we don't get anywhere near enough coverage IMO on free to air, but I tend to watch all of what we do get. As a keen follower of non-league football I personally would be interested in seeing that televised also, I'd like to see them scrap all coverage of women's football in order to better cover the leagues below the Premier League - because it's a far greater standard than women's football and there's far more interest in that than there is women's football anyway. So with supply and demand taken into consideration - what argument is there for televising/radio coverage of women's football?

Regarding other sports, I'm a big fan of Ice Hockey, the Beeb showed the Elite League Playoff Final online on Sunday, yet they've not covered any of the season before then. GB are playing in their World Championship next week, they'll cover the games on radio but not television. Yet I believe Ice Hockey is the fourth most watched sport in this country (if you put both rugby codes together - so in truth it's fifth).

I suppose the truth of it is that the BBC don't really care very much about sport, maybe that's forced upon them due to financial reasons, but when all the sport contracts are handed out, the Beeb don't ever seem anywhere near them.

Gonna ignore my point? Do you see the correlation?

cricket is far and away less popular than football so the argument is perfectly valid.

and I don't see how it is about the standard of the sport being played, otherwise why not just dump all county cricket coverage and replace it with the ipl [Christ what a thought]

why not replace all coverage of the championship and below with European football to be fair we already do, so I can't watch safc play football [blessing at the minute I know] but I can watch serie a or la liga.

ice hockey is class like

Women’s football has been trying to get pushed for years but still nobody is interested and cricket will be no different. I have no issue with them playing and if they can make a living good luck to them but to try and compare the men’s and women’s game is ridiculous. As I said if wisden are so keen to involve them then create a female category and be done with it.

About 5 years ffs

Given the attendances at the average county championship game, there is an argument they should never be on tv....

And still no fucker watches it. That fans against Bosnia other day might as well have been played on Marley Pots playing fields!
I’m not pushing for county championship cricket to be on tv but I’d certainly like to more test coverage on terrestrial.
Women’s sport in comparison to men’s in pretty much every discipline is piss poor and tries to ride on the coat tails of the men’s game with the help of the PC brigade and box tickers. This is just the reality I’m afraid.
