Second Test - NZ v England

Don't rate him, he can prove me wrong by averaging 50 against India in the summer ;)

Cook's the bigger issue, Stoneman will always grind out 50s as he has know massive obvious weakness and he is a good charachter

Cook just scoring no runs at all

I f***ing hate Billy the trumpeter, sad near him a few times, does my head in

Not sure I agree, openers job is to see off the new ball and set the game up for themiddle order

People become obsessed with only 100s count.

No point getting a 100 then 5 single figure scores

56, 35, and 60 this series, for an opener, that will do me
He averages mid 20s doesn’t he? That’s not good enough

on about recent form, he is doing his job

Don't just look at stats
Recent form? The second half of the ashes he was very poor.

I don’t just look at stats. But he’s a batsman who has a top score of 60, that’s just not good enough.

We slate Vince for throwing it away, Rocky is the same

And there we go! Not good enough.

Have you actually been watching this game? We only had a lead of 29 and thanks to them 2 we are now in a really strong position to look to go and win the game

strange post to be honest

And yes he has done his job this series, that is recent form.

I’m not no, I’m travelling.

In isolation 60 and 75 are good innings. Indeed.

But its not in isolation that’s the point

2 games is recent form? And you ignore the previous 3?

I repeat, a top test score of 60 in 10(?) tests is not good enough

They played really well and have set the game up for England, taking the time now to moan about them, yeah I don't get that at all.

It’s a theme about them throwing it away. Again. They have both done it so many times. Get in, don’t throw your wicket away. It’s so frustrating

By all accounts they did, Vince especially, bat very well.

Decent position with batting to come. We need to be mindful that we aren't getting full days in, I'd get lead up to 370/380 and get them in.

Being bowled out wouldn't be the worst thing in the world

I hate trumpets at matches too... TMS said his day job is lead trumpet at Mathilda in the West End. 'Spect he's quite good at that.........

No it isn't. If there was a clear and obvious replacement he would probably be dropped in the summer. However when you look at the options Hameed and Jennings have had poorer series against WI second string than Stoneman has against the best bowlers in the world. The likes of Robson and Lyth also averaged 30 and Stoneman has outscored both of them easily domestically for the last 4 or 5 years. There is no youngster pushing a really strong case. With that background Stoneman has done just about enough to start in the summer.

I agree, the cupboard is bare.

He isn’t doing his job mind. That’s a ridiculous suggestion from Johnson

Just saw this..... an alternative take.

England’s interminable tour was launched five months ago by a fine partnership between Stoneman and Vince when they crashed Western Australia’s junior bowlers around the Waca in a stand of 153 after Cook had hung his bat out to the second ball of the tour. The Ashes also began with a stand of 125 between Stoneman and Vince after Cook had hung his bat out, and in the last innings of this tour the same pair added 123 for the second ball after Cook had - you guessed.

Fair enough

I apologise to @The Rat

He needs to learn from the way Strauss used to play IMO.

At the beginning of the Ashes Stoneman looked in really good touch timing it beautifully and generally got out in the early part of that series to quality bowling. In this series he looks out of touch and is grafting it out up to a point. I recall Strauss getting a couple of tons where he could barely lay bat on ball and couldn't time a thing but he just kept patient for hours on end to get his ton. At the moment its almost as if Stoneman is trying to do that but after a while he just gets sick and has a howk and gets out.

Stoneman is completely and utterly out of form, but he still got 2 50s and a 30

That is the type of guy you want in the side

I'd back him to return to form

The ashes was very tough, best attack in the world, and everyone struggled, but I don't see the point in dropping him

I agree his overall record is average, but if he keeps up his recent form of grafting out scores then keep him in, too much obsession with 100

Today with Vince is a good example, I accept if he gets 150 that transforms the match, however if he got 100 and out he has only added like 20 more, so it makes no difference to the game.

In agree with almost all of that however I think when you have done the hard work like he has in this series to get to 35, 55 and 60 and then not make at least one large knock is disappointing. On each occasion he sort of got himself out as well. Definitely stick with him though.

Absolutely

He was really struggling yesterday like, barely scoring, saw a wide ball and tried to just force it down.
