Where to stay in New York?

Looking at possibly going in July for a week or so with my lads (19 & 16)

Which area would people recommend to stay in? Hotel or rent an apartment? Have looked at air bnb etc and plenty of choice.

Cheers.

Air BnB is an option, but keep in mind it's illegal in NYC. That's not to say you won't get a good price.

Where you stay depends on what you want. For a first trip then you can't really go wrong with midtown if you can find something cheap enough.

I would avoid. Mine was cancelled 3 days before I went.

Anywhere but Midtown would be my advice.

Try and get an Airbnb either on the Lower East Side, Greenwich or Chelsea in Manhattan if you want to stay on the island, or if you're willing to travel in Williamsburg, Carroll Gardens and Gowanus are very nice as well.

Failing that, the first time I went I stayed in a tiny hotel called Pod in Manhattan that was relatively cheap iirc.

The ROW, NYC
It's on 8th Avenue.
We stayed there in December and it was great.

Mr and Mrs K stayed at The Manhatten, Time Square when we were on honeymoon, but I think I preferred The Row to be honest!

First trip......

Why?

Unless he doesn't want to do any of the usual touristy stuff of course.

Because it's shite and touristy. Like going to London and stopping next to Hyde Park with all the souvenir shops and crap restaurants.

You can travel in to see the sites then when you head back to your digs you know you've got class bars and places to eat nearby.

Hilton Times Square is handy as it's not actually in Times Square so it's close to most things without the horrendous crowd negotiation that you have to do when staying anywhere in Times Square. We stayed at the Renaissance Times Square too which was actually in TS and an absolute nightmare if you wanted to go anywhere although those red tourist busses stoped right outside which was decent.

I'm in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 128 West 29th Street, when I go at the end of June. I think I may have mentioned it on another thread that I'm off to see U2 at Madison Square Garden .... only 104 days

Near Grand Central Station. I didn't choose where to stay.

If price isn't an issue, midtown is a great place to stay regardless. Some very nice hotels, good transport links, close to stuff. Obviously for a night out you'd avoid it, but there's taxis and stuff.

Equally the opposite would be true.

Not sure how beneficial it would be to have access to all the tourist attractions first thing in the morning or last thing at night like. I usually want scran or booze.

Not sure what you mean to be honest. Plenty to do in midtown early on and taxis run all night. Either way it's his first trip, he probably doesn't know his way around - midtown is a canny start.
