The Bookkeeper of Auschwitz has died.

At least he didn’t have to serve his prison sentence. I always believed that he was being made a scapegoat for stuff that was beyond his power to change. Maybe now that he’s dead the people responsible for taking him to court will back off and recognise the time has passed for vengeance.

He was volunteer in the SS. You had to be idealogical Nazi to join.

He knew what was going on, saw what was happening, him and his mates wined and dined themselves on the cash and gold that was taken from the poor bastards that were being gassed in the next building.

He could have transferred. He could have resigned.

Don’t be silly. He did request a transfer and was refused. He was under military discipline do you really think that he could have resigned in the middle of a war? In the same circumstances, the vast majority of people would have done exactly what he did, do as he was told and keep his head down. I know that I would have irrespective of what my personal opinions were, but I guess this will bring out the virtue signallers in force. Try being honest and tell me, what would you have done?

That’s true actually I didn’t think of that. Fair enough.

The vast majority of Germans didn’t join the SS. This wasn’t the regular army. This wasn’t a case of just being a solider and doing your job. Do you even know what the SS was?

Virtue signalling? Really?

And he'd have been killed.
But there you go. He may not have pulled any triggers, but by being a part of the machine, he's just as guilty as the rest of them

Seriously?

What about a cook in the army? Are they also complicit? Or a Batman?

In wars people are ordered to do bad things that they would never normally do. Should we round up the last of the Dresden bombers or Dambusters and put them on trial for crimes against humanity or is it only the gas chambers that count as being beyond the pale?

When does peace and reconciliation start?

Aye I’m suprised at myself for not remembering you can’t just quit a military position.

My overall point still stands though.

He wasn’t in the sodding army.

He wasn’t in the Wehrmacht. He wasn’t in the Heer, Luftwaffe or Kreigsmarine.

He was in the SS.
